I have a problem that some of you electrical wizards may be able to answer. My 1993 VS was delivered in Jan. I noticed at that time that the 3x3 plastic or bakelite box on top of my generator was oozing a gooey melted plastic-like mess onto the gen. and down to the deck next to the dipstick. I'm told that it is a resistor. I cleaned up the area and have been looking for it to happen again. The engine starts and runs fine and I have 14 volts at the battery so the system is charging. I will change the part as soon as I am sure I have fixed the problem. One theory that I had was that in shipping the key was left on accessory because the ignition switch had loosened up and rotated in it's hole. The key was at 12 o'clock position and the should have been off. The acc. position is at 10 o'lock when the switch is in the right place. The battery was nearly dead. Has anyone had this problem or have any other thoughts? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Thanks for any input. Also, what does the resistor do?

CB Perf. sells the usual 55 amp alternator{with internal regulator}.

There are 75 and 95 amp units available...You may have to go to So Cal Imports, or Moore Parts,or some other source for these....

55 amp is more than adequate if you are not pulling a tremendous electrical load....It will hold head lights, wipers, a radio with a reasonable output, and driving lights.....

Good luck....
Thanks, guys, that's all great advice. What is the best place for coil? Fan shroud, fire wall? Also, will there be any modification needed to assure the new part will be in the correct location in relation to fan shroud , gen stand, etc.? Thanks for answering what you may think are elementary questions. I used to work on my own cars before everything got computerized, and I'm just getting back into it.
Thanks, Mike. That looks like the hot set-up.No pun intended. Have a "beauty day".

I found a 55Amp alt. in Moore parts for $125, and one with stand, clamp and backing plate for $180. I'm not sure I need the other stuff, but it might make installation easier. It's tax time and mad money is tight. Thanks all...this is such a great site. It has already helped me with a few problems.

One more silly question, Where does the wire that now goes to the voltage regulator end up with a single wire alt?
