I used to think I was on the "do" side- I mean it's 2003, and hydraulic lifters are what- 1940's technology. It seems odd to me that almost every manufacturer can make a reliable engine now with variable valve timing, but we're still "setting the tappets". But the reality is- nobody who does it for a living wants to build even a mild Type 1 with them. The kicker is- it takes all of about a half hour to adjust them. It really is no big deal.
Mike,
I think that the quality of the Mexi-crate engines is a little spotty. I have a "built" engine which I believe was derived from one of these and I have had good luck so far (8400 miles and counting). The quality of the engine components and build quality is not up to par with the engines from the high end builders in the USA, but they are relatively inexpensive. I plan to replace the engine and/or car when my ship comes back in (you go DOW), but in the meantime, my little second-hand VS is just fine. The word on the street is avoid the hydraulic lifter package.

Poor balance
An oil pick up tube the size of a 40 Horse
cast parts(Like George said even the crank)
crappy Compression Ratio
Hydro valves (YYYUUUCCCKKK)
not even fired up before they ship them out.

I'd rather go to a junkyard and pick up an old half ass rebuilt German engine, you'll be ahead of the game.

See, I gain nothing by telling you this, because I don't even sell a TI engine less than a 2017cc any longer....
BTW, Porsche did not use Hydro valvetrains in their engines till the last generation 993......They knew how much aircooled engines liked Hydros! So do I!

Valve maintenance should be considered a thing that people look forward to, because you can find out so much about the engine in less than 1 hour....its not an adjustment, its an inspoection....guys that run in with a feeler gauge and start breaking torque on adjuster screws are missing all the fun...check everything while you are there.
My original crate 1776 spun the cam gear off at 3700 RPM with only 600 easy miles on it. Valves and lifters ruined.... case would need split.

Went with a new AS41 case and built one right from the ground up. I love this engine, understanding the limitations of a 1776. It runs, sounds, and revs great and is reliable. Scat c/b crank/rods/flywheel, E120, CB44 heads p&pd, 1.25 ratio rockers (Scat). Dual IDFs, Elec Fuel Pump, Mahles, Melling, full oil cooling system with stat, cooler and fan. All tin in black, late model doghouse, 009 with CompuFire, 1.5 qt sump, Berg breather system, CSP dual 1 1/2" exhaust with boxes all coated, 3:88 Freeway Flyer, welded/balanced fan. Running Vavoline 10w 30 full synthetic. Nothing all that unusual, but it seems to work!

Biggest mistake I made on my speedster order was to get A/C and a crate hydro engine. Both were gone within 6 months.
