Saw this on Ebay...what is the story...anyone know??

If I read it right, 2 cars for $25K???? Might this be a lead on the VS cars that vanished I know the dash and door panels are different but how hard can it be to change an interior in good 'ole Meh-hee-ko?

Hmmm...

The shape of the side window opening on the top is different, and I don't see the slight bowing of the fender due to the use of a poorly repaired original for the molds by the VS body provider. Still, that's not conclusive. The flares on the widebody look more like a CMC than a VS. The interior pictures don't show the usual VS heater openings. My gut tells me that the missing VS cars are overseas - but it's only a feeling. Hey, I've been wrong before (once or twice).
When I was looking for mine a few months ago, this guy contacted me with pictures of his shop. He said he is buying shells and building them and he sent me pix of the white one in construction. He also has some really old ones complete that he was rebuilding. He had a deal with a guy in Texas selling them (one or two at a time like that blue and white one with the hard top that sold on ebay a while ago. He is painting and building from the pix he sent to me. I also looked at one from Mexico here in San Diego a while ago and it was about 15 years old. The guy with the white one shown seems nice enough and just making a few bucks with cheap labor down south. We had quite a few back and forths. He even offered to sell me that white one when it was done and deliver it to the border (I am in San Diego). With all the VW Type 1 motors and bug part and dead bugs in Mexico (old taxis, etc.) how hard is it to make a mold for the shell?

I don't think after talking to this guy that they are stolen. Rather, they are shells on top of old Mexican VW's.

I did not ever see one first hand so who knows? Might be a bargain for a daily driver. I don't know.
