The 1.8 (and 1.6) are great little engines (I have a street/track 1997 Miata), but they don't put out much hp. My 1.8 only puts out 133 (crank) hp. Mind you, I'm planning on installing a 'cold side' supercharger next Spring (tired of getting passed by everyone on the track straight-a-ways). It won't need an intercooler and will put out around 220 (crank) hp. Now that would be something in a light speedster!
Just guessing here, but it seems to me that an inline four cylinder, especially an OHC inline, might be just a tad taller at the rear than an opposed VW engine! In other words, check for deck lid clearance. I understand that IM makes these installs on occassion, but I also believe that IM moves the whole driveline forward about three inches, which would supply both a better weight distribution as well as additional deck lid clearance. Just something to be aware of.
The Miata engine is going to hang an extra two cylinders off the back of the Speedster, might be too much of a pendulum effect.

If you're going to run a water-cooled mill, better off using a GM V6 . . . just kidding.

Speaking of alternative power plants, and by way of a small hi-jack, still looking for an adapter kit for the Rotary engine if anyone has one for sale.
