Gentlemen, Start your engines!

The Speedster meet is on! Join us on Saturday, October 25th for the Mid-Atlantic Speedster Meet, Winery Tour and Cruise. Plan to be there for the last weekend of Daylight Savings time and enjoy the autumn scenery. We will tour and taste at the Linganore Winecellars in Mt. Airy, Maryland, cruise the rolling Maryland countryside with a run through the Monocacy National Battlefield and Old Town Frederick and then roll into the historic town of New Market. The tour, tasting and Battlefield are free but don't forget to pack your "pic-a-nic" basket for lunch.

Don't miss this one. More than 20 Speedster owners have expressed interest in attending representing cars from JPS, Intermeccanica, CMC, Vintage, Ryan and Beck. Know other Speedster owners? Invite them too! Awards will be given for "Driver's Choice" and "Longest Distance".

Details will be e-mailed to you upon request including a schedule for Saturday and information about points of interest. Additional details will be e-mailed as we get closer to October 25th. I'll also provide contact information if you want to caravan with other owners from your general direction. Let me know if you are planning to stay over into Sunday and if you need lodging information

This will be a great way to meet other owners, cruise your Speedster and enjoy the fall driving season. Don't forget, I need to know if you are coming so we can plan accordingly, please RSVP by October 17th. Let's make this first Mid-Atlantic Speedster meet a success, put October 25th on your calendar and plan to join us!

Questions? Need lodging? Send me an e-mail. We hope to see you there!!!

This meet is still on as planned. Tonight the local weatherman said the leaves will be at their peak next weekend so it should be a beautiful drive. Not much activity on this site but alot of communication via e-mail, guess I'll have to tell everyone to start using Speedsterowners.com. We are still pushing 15-20 Speedsters planning to be there. We're keeping our fingers crossed for dry weather. An e-mail went out today to everyone who said they were coming so people could caravan if they want. If you're interested and not on the distribution list, send me an e-mail.
Robert,

Yes, the camera is loaded and ready and I plan to post then to this site. The only question mark now is the weather - we have our fingers crossed.

BTW, you mentioned Watkins Glen. I never told you we made the event and had a super time. They announced an all-time high registration for a vintage race event, suprising since I would have thought Monterrey would be higher. The town and track does a super job. 200 race cars made the drive into town at 4:00 PM on Friday and then parked double-file down the length of main street. After formalities commemorating 50 years of racing they took off, drove two laps of the old street course and then headed back to the track. One of the fun things was hunting up the Speedster replica owners who were there, we met four but their drive too far for our Speedster meet. We had such a great time even my wife still talks about it.
Glad to hear the Glen was a good time for you and your wife. I always enjoy my time there. I have been there with my family (when the boys were younger) for a pass through during summer vacations, and with one son for the Vintage Races.

I am going to book earlier for next September, and take my Roadster down. Hope your weekend goes well! If it were closer, I would be there.

For those who are attending on Saturday, don't forget to pack your pic-a-nic basket! There is no food available close to or at the Linganore Winecellars and we're going to eat lunch there after the tour/tasting and before the cruise. Pick up something on the way in if you forget. I'm e-mailing final details tonight to everyone who is attending. Weather looks great - 60+ degrees and sunny!
Manifold goodies, reminds me of the time while in the army we were convoying over to the Yakima Firing range from Ft. Lewis. We had been issued C rations for lunch. I was driving the 5 ton dump and my inventive buddy decided we wouldn't eat the cold pork and beans but be the envy of our company and eat warm food at the lunch break. He tied a number of cans on the exhaust manifold of the BIG Continental 6 and off we went. About an hour later we started smelling food, yum. We soon stopped foo lunch and I popped the hood. Yoiu guessed it, pork and beans, tuna and noodles and other morsals covered the engine and underhood! It was my truck so I got the clean it up. What a deal that was, cleaning up baked C rations all over the engine. Crux of the story is that food does heat very nicely in the engine compartment but a small escape hole in the can would be prudent.

Have fun on the rally and post the shots, hopefully with owners and cars including captions. Enjoy.

Bruce
Here is the ultimate engine cookbook. I'm going to post it in it's own thread as well. Anyone who trys out a recipe, let us know.

Ron:

I'm jealous also. Why don't we get Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to secede, then B.C. would be right next door to Ontario? Then I could join you guys. Makes a lot of sense to me.

There must be a few more listers from the S. Ontario area for us to do something such as this next year. Lots of nice vinyards on the Niagara Peninsula. An old high school buddy of mine owns one - Malivoire Estates. I'm sure I could arrange something with him.

Anybody interested contact me. I need something to look forward to, in order to get through the coming winter :-).

Bob
Ron O,

I'm a NW guy and have an idea. I went up to "Parts Obsoletes" camp out deal this past June. Saw a couple of Henry's cars there. I'm pretty sure there are several Speedster guys around Portland and several in Seattle. The camp in/out is near McMinneville, Or. It is SW of Portland not too far in the heart of the Oregon wine country. This thing runs Friday thru Sunday. If I remember right the car show is Saturday and the swap in on Sunday. I just went Sunday but lots of Porsche and VW items on sale. You can tour his restoration shop. All in All sounds like we could get something going early in June for us Replica guys, and yes, we are welcome! Bring your tent and cooler, eh?

Lets talk about it with all you NWers, Bruce
I'm in Seattle, but I'm a ways from having a drivable car. Maybe this spring. Anyone else in Seattle? I have seen a couple of speedsters around here, and yesterday actually saw a real 356, Ivory, Convertable D (rollup windows), crusing down Roosevelt.

I would be more than willing to drive North, South, or East for a meet, when I have something drivable. Sounds like most Northwest people are up in B.C. How about something in Penticten. Lots of wineries there. My uncle lives in Summerland and have been up many times to visit. Weather is usually nicer there than over here on the coast.

Theron, we need that zip code thing to see where we all live!
Alan: We had a GREAT time. We had an even dozen speedsters all lined up
in a row at the winery. It's late and the wife is deciding which of the 6
bottles that came home with us to open. Pics tommorow. This was the first time for the "better half" to see other cars. Bad idea for my wallet maybe? Oh yeah. She saw winding windows for the first time.(Karl Macklin's car). Oh! I like them hon! How bout? I had to keep an eye on her from jumping in it and taking off. And the canvas roofs! Oh hon,
I really like that.$ Cha-ching$ Cha-ching$. I think I'll have some more wine now!

I was at Gary's picnic last spring with my newly completed IM Speedster. It's a great time and an opportunity to see many nice cars. Replicas are quite welcome, the food is excellent and the country is beautiful replete with, like Bruce says, dozens of wineries within a few miles. Gary's farm is a nice place to camp and would be central to all those in the NW. I'm sure Henry will be there as well.
By all accounts our first cruise Mid-Atlantic Speedster Meet was a success. By 10:00 twelve Speedsters of various origins - 4 CMC, 6 Vintage, 1 Intermeccanica and 1 JPS - arrived at the Linganore Winecellars in Mt Airy, Md to a beautiful, sunny day with temps in the upper 60's. At 11:00 we were treated to a tour of the winery by one of the Linganore Winecellars' owners, he explained and showed everything from the equipment that reaps the grapes from the vine through the bottling process. At noon we enjoyed a wine tasting that included Linganore's seasonal warm spiced wine. On to lunch on the deck and voting for Driver's Choice (Karl Macklin, 2001 Intermeccanica), Best Paint (Glenn Noble, 2002 JPS), Longest Distance (Stacey Campbell, 219 miles) and Hard Luck (Matt Haugh, 2003 Vintage, blown distributor cap). At 1:30 everyone lined up for a tour of the local countryside as my wife photographed each of the participants as they worked their way down the dusty entrance road (see file). Destinations included the Monocacy National Civil War Battlefield, Old Frederick and New Market, Md. We lead the parade and it was quite a site looking in the mirror and seeing all those Speedsters strung out behind us on the curvy, autumn backroads. Imagine the looks, waves and horns we experienced as we drove through the countryside. See photos with a prefix of "MA" posted in my file - "mdspeedster". If anyone else has photos from the meet, please e-mail copies to me or let me know if you cannot e-mail them and we'll arrange something via snail mail.

To plan for this event I was able to find at least 70 registered east cost owners on the Speedsterowners.com website and started e-mailing those who were within "driveable" distance. If you are registered on this site and are located east of the Mississippi you will be receiving a notice from me (you'll also be welcome if you are west of the Mississippi!). Everyone who attended Saturday agreed to do it again. We'll be bigger in 2004!
Scott and all us NW Speedster people.

I think the Parts Obsolete campout and general fun stuff could become an annual event for us NW Speester nuts. Parts Obsolete has some more info on their web site. I believe they have some 04 info already. As Scott says, it is a fairly central area for us. I am about 250 miles south but that is only a hour or so on I-5,(tongue in cheek.) I had a ball there and only attended on Sunday, the parts swap day.

I am going to post another thread on the events page, let me know what everybody thinks!

Bruce
Thank you, thank you, thank you Bruce for taking the time and effort to make the Mid Atlantic winery tour and Speedster run an event that was enjoyed by all. I know a lot of work went into the planning and execution of this event. It was fun seeing all the different Speedsters and noting the differences that made each one unique. What a great bunch of guys. I hope we can get together again in the Spring and do something similar.
Karl, I'm still waffling - I fly up to Seattle Nov. 15 to see an old friend that lives in the San Juans (islands opposite Seattle in Puget Sound) then drive up to Vancouver to meet with Henry. Probably a couple of days there kicking tires, test driving, and going over things (checking major assembly mountings, etc.). If the weather window is good I'll drive it back; if not, I'll fly back and the car will be shipped. Either way it should be here late Nov. or early Dec.
