While counting down the days before I pick up my new toy, I got to thinking about the different uses for our beloved Speedsters. What if Jesse James had an opportunity to transform one of these gems into something more utilitarian? How about a parking lot sweeper? a SWEEPSTER! Any thoughts? Ideas? Donors? George?

I just sold a classic speedster that was mounted on an early Scout four wheel drive frame with a front mounted 4 cyl. motor. (only in West Virginia!) I sold it to a buddy of mine who is now restoring it with VW mechanics. I was too shocked at the time to take pictures of it. Ive owned over 20 speedster replicas, and this by far was the strangest!
Monster garage tonight is one of those specials where they actually don't build anything, but look at other people who have built stuff across the country and a class builds something.

The class build is a Vintage Dune Buggy and I just watched the part where they cut the pan in half. Kind of scarry how they did it and I'm not sure I would want to drive in the buggy later.

Anyway, FYI in case anyone is checking things and wants to watch the finish. 9:30pm here (PST).
Chris- The method that they employed cutting the pan (in a "V" shape) is the best method for shortening the VW pan. It provides a stronger joint where the two halves meet.

Speaking of the same show, the fiberglass buggy body, lights & windscreen were all dontated by Vintage Spyders from Anaheim, CA
Glenn,

Yes, I know I used the same "V" method for cutting my pan, it just seemed they were doing it sort of hap-hazardly. It was probably just TV and not being able to see all the actual welding that took place.

I didn't realize Vintage Speedsters and Spyders were a differet company. Looks like Theron has the market cornered on these websites :)
Tom,

Coming from your direction we currently have 6 from Virginia, 4 from Ohio, 2 from Iowa, 2 from Tennessee, 1 from Indiana, 1 from Arkansas. I expect more from these states, West Virginia and surrounding states as we get closer. Jerome Smith (jsmith@automationplastics.com)is in Ohio and is coordinating the caravan starting in Iowa so you might want to contact him to see if you can hook up. I can send you alist of names and e-mail addresses for owners from West Virginia if you would like to contact them about attending?
