I thought I would start a thead on the numerous car events happening in the Monterey area in Mid- August. The Monterey/ Laguna Seca Historic races are an opportunity to see some very rare, weird, fast, slow, beautiful and ugly cars and people. See www.montereyhistoric.com for details and Google Monterey Historic for lots of pics of former events. If you like old cool fast cars, this is a great chance to see them actually racing. When I was at the 2003 race, I was amazed at the very expensive hardware being pushed to just below the limit. Plus the pits are open to common folk like me to drool over all sorts of exotic stuff. Like the wives of owners of $1,000,000 cars. Aalso the Pebble Beach Concours bring out the big boys with the best of the best classics. Throw in a car auction, the Monterey Peninsula and Laguna Seca for the back drop and it is a must do. Let's get a few So Cal folk to hook up with the No Cal and Pac Nw bunch and compare Polyester Porsches! We already have some Spyder Club interest. Angela? Vince? Dale? Scott Sloan, ya out there? Ernie, it's a short drive from you neck of the woods!

A few of the No. Cal. Spyder folks will be participating in the Friday, 8/15/08 Pacific Grove Concours/Rally - it's a sign-yourself-up event with about 250 cars on the streets of Pacific Grove, CA - then a rally around 17 mile drive, Pebble Beach, and Carmel followed by an optional dinner...this event is a lot of fun....and replicas are welcome.
www.pgautorally.org - should be 4-5+ Spyders
.
also, pre-historics Laguna Seca 8/9, 8/10/08 - last year the spyder folks from No Cal drove down and parked just above/uphill from the Paddock next to the first aid building - on the Saturday ... not sure which day we'll be there this year - Barry plans on Sunday - so that may be the day...
.
see you all there...

Will & all - a few Spyder folks will be driving down from No Cal on Sunday August 10th
for the Laguna Seca 'Pre-Historic' races - we're planning to arrive about
10am - there was only a park entry fee last year but the PH organizers may be charging a small fee this year -
practice Saturday and Sunday morning 8am-12 -
races 1-5pm - all groups run each day...last year the 1955-60 cars including a Spyder ran at about 2pm.
.
we'll also be at the Pacific Grove Event the following Friday - August 15th.
.
looking forward to seeing some Speedster friends there at both events!

I am gonna be in the area from 8/9-8/15. Probably in a camper van. As things shape up let's get together. PreHistorics seem cool. Lots of stuff going on. By the way Ernie, that pic with "Marilyn" is cool. But a lot of Marilyn Monroe "Replicas" are similar to our cars. A hot looking babe with somethin' else underneath the hood! Listen to Aerosmith "Dude Looks Like a Lady!"
a little disturbing news re pre-historics - since the 'park' is open - it may not mean too much depending on just what is shut off to spectators - if it's just the paddock - not a big problem (although it was nice to have access to the paddock) - RickJ
.
"Pre-Historics and Ferrari activities during the weekend of August 9-10 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca are not open to spectators. While the area is in a county park and open to the public, the paddock will be closed and there will be no spectator amenities such as restrooms, concessions or available parking."

Well - this looks like it's turned from a nice pre-historic race weekend when spectators can watch the vintage cars race for (nearly) free with full access to an event where the Ferrari Folks have rented out the track and replaced all or most of the traditional "pre-historic" racing - it's still ok to go and enter the park for a small fee - and park and watch the Ferraris run - but not much like the past two years when you could glimpse a Spyder and Speedsters racing - if there's any of that it will be sandwiched between the many Ferrari events of the weekend...
.
If you're 'into' Ferraris - this will be great, though...

It was good to get together with a few Spyder People yesterday at the PH races - we did get to spend some time with Will ('Billyfeet') in the Corkscrew - and I mentioned this publication: 'The Pinecone' as a source of local information about the many events of the week - the historic races and pebble beach concours get ample publicity - but the auctions, the Carmel Concours, and other items can easily be missed and are reportedly well worth catching.

(I see they've excluded the Pacific Grove Concours/Rally, though - one of my favorites - see http://www.pgautorally.org for this one - it's replica friendly for participants and a hoot to be part of)
I have ben off line for a few days. I hooked up with Rick J. and the Spyder boys at the Pre Historics this weekend. Awesome weather, cool cars, no crowds! Today I attended a Porsche and Ferrari Concours in Carmel that was a dream. The cars were rare, immaculate, and the owners were pleasant and liked to talk story about the cars. I met a gentleman who purchased his 1957 Speedster new and still runs it at the Monterey Historics. His wife and daughter were there and told tales of the three kids riding in the back "seat" of the Speedster when small. The guy still had an incredible SEG! The Ferraris were some of the rarest and most expensive in the world. A California Spyder that sold at auction for 10 Million! This week is really turning out to be a car lovers dream trip. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.
Musbjim - You all would enjoy it - this year was an odd one with the Ferrari group renting the track, and the vintage racing content reduced. The past two years, and I'd guess, next year, it's a great weekend with all vintage/historic racing, the paddock is open and the concession stand available for food - almost no crowd, no parking problems, and $0 entry or maybe a $6 park entry fee....
.
I think Will enjoyed it and it's on my list of 'must do' events every year.....RickJ
