More guidance please

The VS rack on a VS speedster ( will not fit a CMC or FF speedster grill) it has 4 tube legs that pass between the grill slats, on the base of those 4 legs are male threads that get bolted to the underside of deck lid. It is a permanent installation but I'm sure it could be easily reconfigured for easy on and off. ....BTW it is easy to clean and wax with the rack on the deck lid. 

Yes to all.  Only "damage" to the engine lid is the 4 mounting holes drilled in the unseen liner (usually painted black).  Rack is up high enough so you can hand wash and wax under it without removing it (which would require undoing 4 nuts/bolts and washers) . 

BUT!

Bear in mind that the luggage rack on a Speedster replica is not especially rugged and can hold about 40 pounds max., preferably, less.

I have a used deck surface mount for sale, this gets bolted directly to the deck lid and is a bit larger and more stout than the VS rack

Thanks Alan, but I like the size and the looks of the smaller one.   Really just wanted to make sure that the deck lid still opens as normal with it and that it wouldn't damage anything. 

So to clarify , if I decide to remove the VS rack later , I should see no marks on the deck lid???

That's correct no holes or related marks on the painted surface of the deck lid , you will have four 1/4"holes that can easily be rubber plugged.

40#?  I thought once you got going 60 mph it acted like a plane wing and provided Boeing 767 uplift?

Alan - Is this the guy from PA/NJ that came to Pumpkin Run?  My favorite color combo - stone grey with a plum color interior.

I regularly put mine on and take it off. After the four holes were drilled in the fiberglass under the engine grill I epoxied some large fender washers to the top of the fiberglass. When I put the luggage rack on I also put four large fender washers onto the bolts before I tighten up the rack with four unlock nuts. After the trip I take off the rack.

I have the replica rack that comes on a Vintage Speedster and I put it on and off all the time --like Robert says , just remove 4 bolts from the underside of the engine lid. I use 4 pretty thick rubber washers against the fiberglass then washers then the bolts.

For a trip I put the rack on so I can mount my leather suitcase than for a car show or just around town I leave the rack off.  It takes maybe 4 minutes to put it on or take it off--easy peasy.

I never put a lot of weight into the suitcase--mostly some clothes for Alice.  It does make it better for her on trips---the ladies seem to want to pack more stuff than most guys.

I finally scored the best looking leather suitcase and added some fantist travel stickers that Rich Drewick made or me and together with Dusty's leather straps it gets a lot of attention and compliments at car shows.

Agree with Robert and Jack.  It's an easy and quick on off procedure.  I'm not sure what Alan meant by a permanent installation, it comes right off. 

If there were loose washers under the grill (and there should be washers there to absorb stress) - it would be a pain to get them back.  They could be epoxied/fiberglass in though making it easier.
