Jack -

Cal & Carol Monsma (SOC 'Monsma') plan on trailering from Edmond, OK. Maybe you can contact him and discuss Morro Bay. Dusty and Sharon also trailer from Colorado. It would be awesome if you and the wife joined us.

This event is a great gathering of SOC couples and great solo SOC drivers. As mentioned many times before, it's like a family re-union (without ANY of the drama) and definitely more fun. Driving cool cars (Speedies/Spyders) along the scenic California Coast and touring backroad wineries is just icing on the cake!

I hope you give it some serious thought!

"It's been 12 months since Billy Bob quit his weight training regimen and his weight ballooned. Billy Bob's spiral into deep depression was exacerbated at Vince's Halloween party when he realized Vince wouldn't be his room mate at Morro Bay."

How sad for Billy Bob. And he had been working so hard to firm up those 2-Pack Abs for a wild night of mauling with his room mate.

Is that guy(?) Bass-Ackwards or WHAT??

What the heck are you guys using for a tow vehicle??? I hope it's not a Ranger pickup!!

I helped a guy rent a U-Haul trailer to take home an Austin Healey he bought from us, and after all was said and done, he spent about half the cost of just going out and buying a trailer for that single trip.

If you're serious about hauling around the country and (like me) prefer NOT to drop back in time to "enjoy the feel of a mid-50's sports car" but would rather have a quiet cabin, A/C and lots of amenities, maybe buying a trailer like a Kaufman or something makes a lot of sense. Just remember that you'll need a decent tow vehicle to go along with it. An F150 or C1500 half ton is OK, but will be about all it can do with anything less than a 5.7 litre. The ultimate (IMEO) is a diesel F250 or F350 or a comparable GM Duramax or Cummins. 17MPG stock, potential 20MPG chipped, GOBS of power when you want it and you'll never even feel the car/trailer back there.

If you're intrested in talking trailers, then Chris and I can probably help - Chris built mine from scratch (I LOVE IT) and he is now running a Kaufman (from North Carolina). Alan was selling pretty decent trailers for a while there and had a nice Aluminalite Speedster trailer that he was hauling behind a V-6 something-or-other for a while and liked it a lot. There are a lot of options out there.

Gordon and Jack,
What about a modified tow bar? I pulled my speedster from lower VA to my house in northern VA w/ no problems and used my 4cyl Honda Element ( only lost abot 2 mpg ) 69.00 for the vw tow bar plus about 1 hour to modify to fit. I can now pull either my speedster or my MG TD and hookup takes 5 minutes. Easy and cheap.

They actually work quite well (just ask Danny Pip).

Somewhere buried at my Dad's I have an old tow bar I made up to tow Dune Buggies. It attached in about a minute to the lower torsion bar and towed straight as an arrow to about 80 (as fast as our '66 Ford Bronco could go with the "Hurricane" 160 CI six in there).

LOTS of people towed 356's to the track using tow bars back then. Hook up, pit it in neutral and go.

Why not??

Of course, you'll be adding mileage, but you could always pull the speedo cable off ;>)
Vince, Keep your twinkie to yourself, nobody here wants any of that business!

Okay, sounds like there's gonna be a good size group going on the Friday wine tour. Woohoo! We've got some winos! As the wino leader, I'm going to make an executive decision (am I qualified to run for President now?) I'll plan the tour with a meeting point off of hwy 101, so it's easy for everyone to get to. We'll leave at 1pm and be at the hotel by 5pm. I'll post a thread with a map and detailed timeline of where we will be and when we will be there, so you can meet up with us at any point. Also, if you feel like arriving at the hotel at 5pm is too late for you, you can peel off and head back to the hotel at any time.

Jen for President 2012!
I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab with the smaller V8 - last one made with a manual six speed. Trailer was a borrowed 18 foot, dove tail car hauler, 7,000 GVW. By the way, it had 4' ramps which make it tough to load without some "help" (I still have the 2x4 pieces provided by Dusty so I could get the speedy off and on the trailer at his place.)

Truck has plenty of power for towing the above with the speedy on board, can run at 75 to 80 with no problem - although the mileage was pretty poor (about 16 mpg). I thought the manual transmission helped on the few climbs we encountered.

Don't know if I can find/borrow a two car trailer (probably a 26" to 28' would do) so Jack could piggy back along. (Problem would be the regular cab Ram. Four across the front seat doesn't work - and sitting in the back in recliners doesn't look "cool".)

Willing to caravan with folks (with us trailering), but our timetable is really tight. We can't leave until Wednesday before so - two days driving to Morro Bay, three days there, and two days returning to Oklahoma.

Best regards,
Cal
Cal,
16 mpg? My poor old Escalade pulls my car and trailer but I would be pleased to get 16 on a regular basis!! I guess I have to pay for the comfort, eh?

Talk your boss into a couple of extra days. Tell him how this is a really important gathering of an "interntional consortium" adn he will be pleased to have you as a representative. If that doesn't work send Carol in to give him the "evil eye".

Happy Trails,
Dusty
Aluminum weights 2/3 the weight of a steel trailer and is 2 1/2 times the price.
I carry "Dively" trailers made here in Pa. and are sold in a 6-8 state area, possibly near you.........Do a search.
They make a single axle full deck diamond plate trailer that is perfect for a speedster measuring 6.5 x 12' with pull out ramps, the fenders is low enough to clear a speedster door too.
Empty weight is just 950lb.
GVW is 2,900lbs.
Leaving an allowable load of 1,950lbs.(a speedater is 1,400lbs.) Comes std. with pull out ramps, LED lighting, 1-7/8 ball, flat 4 plug. Rock guards are abourt $250 but with a short trailer, the pick bed up tends to shield the car against rocks etc.
Can easily be pulled long distance with a Ford Ranger, Toyota etc. I haved hauled ass loaded at 75-80 mph using a '01 4 cylinder S-10. ~Alan
I must be getting old or I had a brain fart, but I thought I saw a post from Dusty in reference to the "So Cal" cars arrival and meeting up with Jen and Blake for the wine run on Friday.

Here is my take,
Personally I don't drink wine, and have no intention of joining the Friday run, I will sit back in the parking lot with my bottle of OBAN and anyone who is around. We will try to get to Morro Bay as quickly as possible, but do not want to kill the chances of a good wine run, so if you earlybirds need to leave before our arrival than so be it. The ride from So Cal to Morro Bay is bitchen and all I need in one day....
There is no way to anticipate our arrival time due to any problems that may occur, so the best we can do is keep in touch by phone..

"For the Friday wine tour, we'd really like to do the Eastside wineries (we have good connections at great wineries). In order to do that we'll have to plan on a bigger window of time. It would be easiest to meet in downtown Paso (at the park) that way people coming from north or south could meet up there. We're thinking around noon and then would end at the hotel in Morro Bay by 4pm. We would also provide a map and itinerary with times for the trip, so people can meet up anywhere along the way. What's everybody think?"
Vince,
You MUST be getting old (what makes you thing you have an edge on that commodity?). The post you refer to was in error as we got our signals crossed up. Probably my fault ... sorry for any confusion. Blake and Jen are definitely going to lead us on a super winery tour Friday but the exact timing and plans have not been finalized yet. I am trying to work it out to enable you SoCal guys to be able to join us, if at all possible. Stay tuned and I will post definite information as soon as I am sure we have the details ironed out.

In the meantime, go back to getting old ... just be sure Teri doesn't join you in that venture!

Happy Trails,
Young Dusty and the younger Lovely Miss Sharon
Thanks Bro... Lili and I are still SOC die-hards, however I am working on my "the secret" concept and using the law of attraction here.. I am still looking for work, but have interviewed at a place I am really excited about, so I am thnking very positive and in doing so, I have made a commiment to Morro Bay. to reinforce my law of attraction beliefs... If I beleive it it will come to me. and I love Morro bay too...

Larry B - Glad to hear you're going to maintain tradition and make an appearance with the 'Gelcoat Wonder'! Should be another fun time. BTW - how's your building project- finished or still in the works?!

Billy - There's no two ways about it, you & Nina ARE GOING TO MORRO BAY!!!! It'll be the most fun you've had with your clothes on (or at least most of your clothes on!). Seriously, it'll be fun either in your Mini or hitching a ride in some empty right-seats.
