Hi, I am looking at purchasing a speedster I haven't seen first hand yet and the owner doesn't seem to know much about the car. Can any of you tell much from this picture?

I would like to know if it's a dual port motor, carb type and is there anyway I can tell if it's an IRS or Swing Axle. What type of dual carbs would you recommend as an upgrade. Anything else you can spot from this would be appreciated.

Thanks guys,
James

Can't tell for sure about the motor being a DualPort or Single, I would guess Dual Port, it looks like there might be end castings on the manifold. The carb looks like a standard ( stock VW )Solex or Bocar. It looks like it has a 009 distributor. You can't tell from this picture if it is an IRS or Swingaxle, since that refers to the transmission. You will have to rely on the owner's information.

For upgrades, you need to know more about how the motor is setup. What is the displacement,(1600cc vs.1776cc, etc.), what kind on cam it has, ratio rockers, exhaust, etc..
Thanks Patrick, The motor is a 1600cc the current owner just doesn't seem to know much about his car, I'm hoping he can locate the build sheets.

It is a VS built on a '68 pan does that mean that Kirk would automatically go with the Swing Axle or is it an easy change over at that point? I hope it's an IRS. Does anyone have a picture of each looking up from the bottom, so I can ensure what I am looking for.

Thanks J
James,
If it is a stock 1968 pan, it will be a swing axle. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the half-shaft (driveshaft). If it has a CV joint on the inside only, it is a swing axle. If it has a CV joint on both the inboard and outboard ends, it is an IRS. The only way it would be an IRS is if the the 1968 was an auto-stickshift model and a late model 1968, or someone has changed it over. It is possible to change over to an IRS.

Hope this helps,
Jim
