Angela, I am a lucky man, but I do work hard to be able to afford them. I found a pristine S4RS Monster 07 on e-bay with 318 miles, for 11k. Out the door the bike is 17-18 grand, could not turn it down. 134hp out of the box and the original owner put Termi exhausts on it, additional 2500 add-on. Meanwhile , my wife has banned me from the e-bay site forvever.
In July '06, I did a low side get-off on some grit camouflaged in the course road surface. Wearing all the right gear, I had no road-rash but I trashed the helmet, jacket, and pants. Boots got a good scuff and I found out a few days later the sprain was a fractured fibula and the Insurance company bought me new gear and wrote a check for over $3g's to patch up the '02 R1150RT. Even with that amount in dollars damage, a short piece of duct tape did the necessary repairs to get me the 100 miles home. (Interesting that I was 61 back then). Won't it be great to share this sort of stuff with the other geezers at the nursing home soon?
In my business, I now haul mostly insurance company owned totaled vehicles......There checks are always good.
Just about all bikes no matter how little the damage is, gets an automatic totaled clasification, insurance check is cut and rernmitted to the insured. They auction the bike to recoupe some of the funds they paid out. Almost all damaged bikes now get shipped out of the country.
Good info Alan. Awhile back, I "totalled" an '86 Honda 650CS. Like Vince, the front wheel, upon being confronted by a larger vehicle, was folded back into the front frame rail. Engine, drivetrain, rear end and body work all untouched. This was a very rare bike with only 5000 miles, only made for one year. NOBODY would fix it. I always wondered what hapened to it? I see choppers being cut and welded on TV every week, why can't someone cut and re-weld the triple tree on my frame? The only answer I ever got was the "liability" issue, by the other guys insurance company, who was paying the bill.

The lawyers win again, and we lose.

p.s. Only one carrier, in this county of 3 million people, will even tow a disabled motorcycle. Like it's so difficult?
Ouch Vince!

On the subject of bikes - I just got one of these (drag bars instead of "Ape Hangers")! I'm going to raffle it off at my new restaurant, Lucky's. I have to assemble it on Monday and then I have a guy that's gonna come in and custom stripe it (Von Dutch style) and do a vintage version of our logo on the tank. You know I luvs the old school!
