Marty, that sounds about right and is in agreement with my mileage readings. Since we have virtually the same engine and similar wet weights (mine was scaled at 2335# at Carlisle a couple of years back), your highway estimate is right on. Oh, by the way, the Red Man seems to be perfectly content running on 87 octane fuel.

I have been getting 10 MPG on my 1835cc with dual EMPI HPMX 40's. I thought it would improve after I synced the carbs and advanced the timing to 30 as it ran better and got rid of the stumble. But still gets 10 MPG so I think it is running really rich. The PO rejetted from 52 to 55 idle jets to get rid of some stumble with timing set at 28. I have been thinking of replacing the carbs with Redline's Weber 40 IDF from Air Cooled.Net and they will jet according to my engine specs. Any ideas out there?
10 mpg on an 1835 is, well......ridiculous. That's about 30% of what it should be. I'm running a stout 2,110 and even that gets 26-28, depending on driving. You should be at least as good as that - my car weighs 2,000 lbs.

If you have the money, I would go for the Webers, especially if they set them up for you. I've had mixed reports on the EMPI carbs - some are great and some not so, but getting new Webers from Aircooled should be a better bet.

Make sure you replace the gaskets at top and bottom of the intake manifolds when you swap the carbs, too.

Fred---I know you will get going on fixing whatever i causing the lo MPG you are having.

No doubt you are running super rich--if you could hook up an AFR meter you'd see it. With our aircooled engines super rich running like you are seeing means that gas will be going into your oil sump and if you get a lot of gas in with your oil you will have a bigger problem than poor ga mileage. Gas is a solvent and can remove the oil from your pistons.

It's a good idea to change your oil more frequently if you have been geeting that kind of gas mileage for long.

Good luck on straightening that issue out.
Guys, thanks for the advice. I did notice that my oil level seems to be increasing over full but never thought it would be fuel. I am going to get it sorted right away without much driving. I have a guy near my house that works on VW's and sync'd my carbs and adjusted the timing and it ran much better. Thought that might help the mpg but it didn't. If he can't help I will get in touch with Jowdy and I have access to a trailer to get it to him. Will post the results. Thanks again.
