I got a 2 in 2 out muffler for IM off Ebay the other day (pic below). There was an old one of unknown make on the car when I bought it but it was clapped out.

This new muffler is a TIGHT fit. Could be the Bursch headers that's on there now but I think its the muffler. There is very little clearance between the muffler and the car body and as this tucks up behind the engine ahead of the car budy I am afraid of what the heat may do to the body. Anyone else having same problems? By tight I mean it actually touches the body in places and there's no room to move it closer to the engine.

I was thinking that maybe some fiberglass header wrap might around the muffler be good idea or should I just go back to my Supertrapp? But I like this muffler..both the sound and the looks. The dual pipes come out in just the right places so I was hoping to cut them back a bit and put on the chrome tailpipes to make it look more or less stock.

Brian,
I would look into building a metal heat shield. Also, alot of new cars have materials between the turbo and catalytic converters and body that would be very applicable to this.

Maybe a race car source could help out as many of those vehicles are fiberglass and run very high temperature exhausts?

Another idea is to have the muffler jet-coated (ceramic coated). It lowers the actual temperature while running dramatically. On the spyder, as long as the engine is running, you can put your hands on the muffler! (when you shut it off - look out heat soaks fast!)

Brian, while everything is new (bolts, hardware.gaskets)have the header pipes shortened an inch in order to give you the extra clearance. Shields and wraps are a "Fix", have it installed/mod'd
upfront to avoid any issues later. Not only will you have heat issues
(melting, discolored or bubbling paint, fire?) but it may transmit vibration into the body when the motor torques a bit.
Nice muffler!!

Oh yeah, if contact area is unseen. Remove the muffler, lay it on the ground, cover with a blanket and then beat the offending area with a sledge hammer.
The thing is that it JUST fits. I can't shorten the headers as there's not room for the muffler to move forward....its up against the engine bracket.

I'm going to have to pull it off and poke around to see how bad it is and if there's room for some sort of shield. Don't really want to beat it with a hammer but the seam stands out about 3/8-1/2 of an inch...perhaps if I beat it and bend it down it would give me more clearance to do either of both of those things.

When Butch had the side exit with the large slash cut tail pipe extension it looked great, cleared the car OK but still generated enough heat to dull the paint.

One thought on heat-wrap is it can act like a wick and become flammable. There are obviously enough people who don't share that concern as I see it applied to lots of high performance cars in magazines and such.

I hope to have to consider these same issues in the not-to-distant future!
