I don't have a solution for you but I don't like yours. Is it a tone issue or loudness issue? Sometime (and I do mean sometime) the source of the unpleasant "noise" is not always the exhaust exit point. The exterior thickness of the muffler wall changes the sound quite a bit.
Ever pick up an exhaust manifold from a v8 or similar. The "mass"
dampens the pulses and sends them down the pipe. A pipe half as thick
would do the routing job but nothing for the noise (and they were cheap).
I'd try a pair of baffles from a motorcycle supplier. Slip them into the pipe and secure with a tack weld or a couple of set screws first, then tack weld them if you like the sound/performance.

I used them in the drag pipes on my old Harley, and the Matchless. Worked great, of course.

We use a similar thing these days in stinger during "mufflers only" nights.

Worth a look?

Luck!
Originally my JPS 2367 cc type IV had a Monza muffler. Nice sound, but it ran out of breath at 5000 RPM. Had the valves opened way up, added a 4-1 header with a Dynomax muffler. WOW! Big power increase, still pulling at 6000 RPM. WOW! Big noise increase (compains my wife). Hey, the engine is behind me, how should I know how it sounds?

So the question is: With a custom made engine, just how do you know what the exhaust will sound like? No dealer wants to offer a free test drive to see how you like their muffler application.
