Well car has been with me only a week and I need a new muffler/exhaust already. The engine is a stock 1776 with dual webers. The exhaust seems to be custom. Headers like empi with dual mufflers each stuck up inside the rear fender wells just outside the valve covers. The position requires removal of the exhaust in oder to remove the valve covers. This in addition to the system starting to leak around a couple of welds makes me feel that I must replace it. Now after just spending all of my $$ for the car I am not really able to spend lots for a new one. I have seen several exhausts for VW's which should work but I don't know if they will fit. My personal preference right now would be to spend as little as possible and to get somtething as close to the sound of my old 356 coupe.

Any suggestions or information about fit of some of the ones I see advertised Hot VW or JC Whitney or ???????
Thanks

"JC Whipee" ...has two exhaust systems that are decent in sound and performance.

"Hide-Out" is a four into one center rear merged header and a single flow thru muffler that tucks up under the right rear wheel well.
This system is designed for an "early Beetle" but fits a speedster perfectly without any alterations.(approx. $90.00)

Second choice is the new "Monza style. Posted else where in the SOC forum and are available from JCW / VS and other VW aftermarket sources. This system has two big exhaust tips that extend straight out the back below the bumper area. (approx. $120.00)

Both are decent "econo" systems

Dale, sure wish some one with a dyno would test that unit of kirks.....just to see if it adds power, or even hurts performance. Have you seen anything like that. By the way Kirks unit does seem to be a "Tri-Mil brand", I bought one off a dealer on E-bay, and Paid $90.00 bucks for it, but I hesitate to install it until I can get some power figures.
