Who would you use for drums, shoes, shims, etc for a Type 1?
I have links to JBugs, CB Performance, VDO (seems sort of too big???) and Summit Performance (too specialized for this stuff?). Like Jack @ Bug Stuff in PA.

Use use CIP1 out of Calif for most of my VW stuff. Good prices (frequent sales) and often free shipping. Even AMAZON is good source.
Sounds like your master cylinder or the hard steel line that goes from the front rusted out. All those parts don't fail at the same time.

When I replaced my aged and cracking license plate light bracket gasket, I realized I should replace the actual lens gasket as well. I looked everywhere for one. Finally found it on JBugs. A new lens and gasket was, like $8, so they're my go-to place now.
I use Dunebuggywarehouse.com they are in Ohio and the shipping is faster. They stock a huge amount of VW parts of all kinds. I haven't found one item they didn't have. Great to work with as well. Good luck with your brakes. It shouldn't be hard to get it fixed up.

Cool, another name for the "Rolodex." Although for me, shipping would be the opposite from the west coast suppliers.
In addition to all those above, Bugcity.com in Connecticut is good for VW parts. They stock everything from cheap Chinese to mid-price Brazilian/Spanish (Varga) to Mexican to German, each hitting a different price point.
Another source I hardly ever remember is Rock Auto. I was just looking up a power steering pump for my ML and I thought I'd take a peek. For typical hard parts they gave pretty much the same thing everyone else does for ~10% less due to economy of scale.
I often use aircooled.net even though their price may be a little higher. The quality seems to be a little more consistent and the owner is very supportive of the hobby.
I use all of the above, but like Jimmy V., Dune Buggy Warehouse is one of my go-tos.
Steel hard line is available locally. It should be 10 x 1.0 metric thread, usually classified as European at Advance Auto. Japanese cars use 10 x 1.25mm, so be careful.
I'm very partial to NiCopp brake lines. Nickel copper alloy. They simply won't corrode, and the copper content makes them really easy to bend.
In addition to the above, also great source for parts- Chinese to a German depending on price point. All sell all brake components and upgrade kits... I personally like to call when I have Qs, ( vs emailing). Hey all have awesome tech support lines/ staff that can help you identify correct parts to fit your setup.

I had an interesting conversation with my local air-cooled expert yesterday. In the continuing saga of my disc brake fiasco, I discovered I'd order some "55-77" rear drums by mistake. The smooth-style drum would have worked fine with the discs, but that didn't work out.
So, after a frustrating 5 hours of searching the Internet for smooth 66-67 front drums I gave up. I'm going to have to buy another set if rear drums to match the 5 spoked 66-67 drums.
Anyway, short story long, Dave told me he never uses anything but German drums on the rear. He said he's had problems with all the Italian, Brazilian, and Chinese aftermarket rear drums wallowing out the splines over time. And he hardly ever works on anything but cars with stock 1200, 1300, 1500cc VW motors. So I think what he says should go double for replica cars with big motors.
PS: In my search yesterday, JBugs was the only place that had German rear drums in stock.
