Jim,
Go to www.kclites.com and click on lights. Click on 50 series
fog lights. Look at part #486. This is a kit, all you need!
They are 5 in.,and not to deep,approx 3!/2 in. I put a pair on
my S.C.coupe and they looked great, not too big. I looked for
a pic. of the car w/the lites, but I guess I didn't take any
before I sold the car.
Jim
I think the "coffee can spout" is the centered oval tail pipe like the one on my car. Henry puts the window switches under the dash; two on the driver's side (for both) and one on the passenger side.

Jim, are you going to get the correct beehive tail lights to go with the '56 build?
Jim,nice job! Its is virtually identical to the car Henry will be building for me starting in few weeks.Only differences mine will be silver with red leather and I hope to find a hidden or remote radio.Good luck, I live in Seattle so I will be going up to visit Henry every few weeks so depending on when you start building your car I will see it during production. Are you still going with Bivens wheels?I will keep you posted,I will be visitng Henry on Dec. 20th.Brooks.
Brooks,

Sounds great on your new Speedy also. Man, are we going to have a bunch of new wheels to ogle at Parts Obsolete in June, yahoo! Are you going with a 2110 also? Seems like that is almost becoming the standard these days, for good reason I guess, power and reliability!

What kind of delivery is Henry telling you? Be nice if you had it for a nice breakin run down to Knotts in late April!

Congrats on the new car, Bruce
Jim,when you say polished on the wheels like a chrome finish or brushed?I may go with brushed and I am not sure about the width.Did Henry recomend 6 inch all around?Bruce I hope to take delivery in March or early April and yes I am going with a 2110 after giving serious consideration to something slightly bigger.Scott Sloan was kind enough to take me for a ride in his way cool outlaw a few weeks ago.As you know it has a 2110 and it seemed to have plenty power.Scott also went with a stock looking shifter which looks more in keeping with the look I am after so I will be going with one also. Thanks again Scott! Brooks.
Jim, I have a pair of NOS vinatge Hella fog/driving lights; they're about 5" diameter, have white lenses, and an interesting vertical grill integral with the external rim that holds the glass - the vertical grills would complement US style vertical headlight grills. You could put yellow bulbs in them, or tint the inside of the glass yellow, or leave them clear.

The only reason I didn't use them was I decided to go with '50's vinatge Bosch "script lens" lights. If you want them I'll donate them to your cause - let me know if you want them and I'll UPS them to Henry.
Brooks, I'm 6'2", maybe a smidgin' more. That's why I am going to get fitted into a good seating pos. I think if I was 6' or less I wouldn't worry about it.

But, yes, I will let you know! I'm going to try and get RonL, Rick, Dale, Scott, and anyone else to meet up there.... do some bench racing and sip on some suds.

Jim
HI jim,Damn, aside from paint and leather colors our cars are nearly identical!I decided to go with the brushed Bivens wheels.I spoke to Pat yesterday and I too will be adding the new engine case.It sounds like your engine is Pat's normal build.I forgot to ask Pat,what horsepower and torque does this motor produce? BTW Pat will be shipping his first new wide five brakes to Henry this week.they should be at Henry's when I visit on Dec. 20th.I am not sure if they have started my car yet,I guess I will know for sure next week.Brooks
the car sounds beautiful! i only have one concern/suggestion, is that where the
seat belt is mounted in your car (as pictured). if you look/research seat belt (shoulder)
anchor points you'll find that the shoulder point is mounted level or above
your shoulder height. if its mounted below that point and is used in an actual
crash it'll break your shoulder. it looks good but no "crash" benefit.
good luck with your car.
We interrupt this thread for an editorial pontification. The rant expressed below, is probably not the opinion of the staff or mangement of this forum, but of the hick-town poster. Proceed with caution...

I don't want to hijack this thread, and I'm not as rabid about this as I'll probably come off, but here goes...

There have been several recent posts on roll-bars, seat belts, and all manner of safty related equipment. Here's the thing about modern seat belts and such in these cars- the number one thing that says "replica" to me is the e-brake between the seats (mine has one, most of us do), number two is going to be the 8 slot chrome VW wheels. But coming in a close third is the three-point or otherwise non "period" looking seat-belts.

Seat belts are great, as are air bags, safety helmets, and Nomex (I hear)- but if I ever got in a wreck bad enough to need a seat belt in my speedster, I think that the number of points it was mounted on would probably be the least of my concerns. I worry sometimes that in our effort to create the safest possible replicas that we often overlook the obvious. Have you ever seen how the windshield mounts to the body? Have you ever looked inside your doors? Have you ever been buzzing down the interstate and looked at a semi axle at eye level? Sure you have... we all have.

I want to be as safe as possible within reason. But don't lose sight of the fact that these are fiberglass bodies without any crumple zones. It's not a motorcycle, but safety-wise- it's closer to a bike than to a 350Z. If you want three point belts- go for it. I'm sticking with something a little more "retro" looking, since I'm only deluding myself anyhow.

OK, "deluding" was a stronger word than I wanted, but my point stands- the belts are not nearly as important as keeping my guard up. Reason number 534 why these cars are not so good as daily drivers... IMHO.

And back to our regularly scheduled programming...
Stan:

I agree with you completely on the look issue.

I agree with totally on the need to drive these cars as defensively as an old biker that has never had a bad accident drives his bikes (e.g. green light means look before you enter...).

Having said that, a shoulder harness is one of the cheapest safety additions that really work. A crash that flattens your speedy to the gas tank but otherwise would be a walk away with a shoulder harness, may (I did say may) be enough to bounce your head and chest against the steering wheel hard enough to kill you (and in reality, its not all that hard).

My main frame of reference is light aircraft. The crash statistics on planes with shoulder harness vs. planes that do not are very stark. The message is, if you want to walk away from a forced landing, use a shoulder harness, period.

I am not a traffic safety engineer, but I think if you talked to one, they would probably disagee with your assessment as well.

Just my two cents worth.

Bill
my point on the harness/shoulder was why bother. if it's going to be needed/added
then install it correctly. i have no delusions about coming out "on top" after anything more than a "bump" in this car.
you have to be nuts if you think your driving one of these cars for safety reasons.
sometimes you can cause problems by the way and what things are installed, sharp edges, pointy projections etc..should be avoided. remember the brainiacs who put
loose 6X9 speakers on thier back window shelves, bang right in the back of the head during an accident.
if i want some meat surronding me i'll take the 5200 lb suv, no fun but a little safer.
Speaking as one who has survived two motorcycle accidents (18 years apart), if I'm going to hit something, I'd prefer to be in my speedster with lap and shoulder belts on, than on my motorcycle. Yes, motorcycling habits are very useful in all driving situations, as previously mentioned in this thread.

That said, John Steele (JPS) has shared several stories in prior years on this forum about Speedsteers that have survived accidents. Thank you for the subframe John.
A weird twist of fate we have the same year and make and european model radio!!! Mine have the Ivory already, but if you want I think they can take yours off and repaint them and make them look nice. Please let us know if you find a vendor for the ivory knobs and buttons just for future information.
