I found the right (59 Frankfurt with Euro dial)radio and it is being shipped to S&M Electro-Tech in MN today. They will take out the old guts and mount their set up inside. He estiamtes a 15-20 day turnaround after he receives it. Then it goes to Intermeccanica for installation.

Anyway, it's a fun experience.

Just a small update on where things are going on my Intermeccanica Speedster:

George Brown sent his vintage pair of driving lights to Henry after Christmas and they are going to Henry's chromer. This is a wonderful gift George, and like I said on the phone this morning I am thrilled and honored. Pretty cool, eh members?

Dave,

Thanks for that advice. I just put it on my note pad as a reminder. That would be a nice touch. I talked to Henry yesterday and he followed up with a mail last night. It looks like all the parts are starting to come together. The NLA Speaker grills are great looking, as are the Beehives.

The frame should be done by Friday, maybe Saturday and I think the body will on site soon after. Henry has a few cars in line ahead of me and as they roll out the door I think it will progess nicely. I know that at least Brook's Speedster & Bill Steele's Roadster are ahead of me. I am anxious to see their cars and final choices as they start sharing pictures. Dale and Bill (and I think Brooks) will be up there soon and it will be neat to hear about their cars and look at Dale's pics. I saw a partial shot of a Roadster today and I think that baby was in Ruby. Whatever color it was, I liked it!

Henry is still working on a couple of things for me in the final details, but all and all it's pretty much sorted out as far as parts and detail. The wheel well detailing is something to add to that final list. Thanks! As far as my posts.... I read through them and felt like maybe I had bragged too much and also had written redundant crud that was just wasting space. I think we are all proud of our Speedsters/Roadsters and maybe I was just making too big of a deal over mine. Don't get me wrong... I am excited, make that thrilled, at the prospect of owning a custom built Speedster from IM. When it's done I will be one smiling owner and will be showing it off.
Terry,

That phone kills me! Imagine using that baby in traffic. I'd have to wear some knee high black stockings, plaid shorts, mirrored aviators, and a nice bowling shirt to complete the look.

Or, I could answer incoming calls with: "Ward, James Ward."

That whole interior has a nice 'Jack Lord' Hawaii 5-0 touch to it.

To Knotts!

Steve those are T-6 through C speaker covers and I THINK they cover up to a 5 1/2 to 6" round. I'll verify that tomorrow. They are in the supplement to their catalog under new stuff. (800) 428-8119 and I think he had them up on the site for awhile, maybe they are still up there. They do the trick, eh? Henry turnd me on to them. I plan on dragging off the neighborhood ATM with our Jeep Winch to pay for them.

I'll p-mail you when I find out. I'll be in the clinic all day but I hope to get some phone time with Henry.
Jim,

The ATM and winch comment brings to mind a string of local (well downstate andyhow) robberies recently. The guy would steal a truck, hook a chain on an ATM, yank it out of the wall or off the stand, and drag it to a dark place where he'd break it open and leave the truck and the wrecked machine. He did this over 40 times before he was caught. The value of the machines far exceeded the money he got (but he did get a lot of money). Maybe you could take it up as a hobby...
Ron, I sort of look at it this way. If my Speedster passes the Ron/Ron/Rick/Henry test then it will be a beast! I told Rick that I plan on picking it up at his shop. He said he will have the Molsons on ice!

I will be up at the end of Feb for a visit and a little bench racing! It's great to see you back on a manly forum ;-)Just kidding! You need to get another Speedy Ron! I saw your approving post on the SAWsters. If you get one then John/Hoss, Steve, and gang will have to break it in for you!

I hope to meet you.

Jim
The body is on the frame now with the larger trunk installed. I also changed the tires to Bridgestone Potenza RE950s. GB's Hellas will leave for the chrome shop soon. And My radio should go on the bench this week. I am calling Emory/Parts Obsolete to order all of the script and badging tommorrow. They are closing the business now and so I think they (the script) will represent a little piece of history from a shop that welcomed VWs and also gave their approving nod to Scott Sloan's Outlaw IM.

J
Jim,
I'm curious about the color. Guards red is usually associated with Porsches. What car came with the ruby red you're using? Or is it a custom color? When you compare Guards and Ruby, side by side is does the Ruby make the Guards look orange?
After seeing one of those Discovery channel Boyd Coddington thrash the car together episodes, I was impressed with the Red that he used for the car that week. According to him, he has it specially made for him. It's the richest deepest red you can get.
I'm liking Red Speedsters more and more! Red is one of the colors I'm considering for my next project.

Greg B
Hi Greg.

The Ruby is a 356 Color. You can find it on the chips for A/B and C models. It is a deep rich red and shows almost crimson, epecially in lower light or shade. I'll post some Ruby Pics of Speedsters I found while trying to decide on colors. Also Signal is a bright and, I think, the most traditional red 356 Color.

I think the Guards does show a little more to the orange side. It's a great color, close to the original true red on Speedsters (Signal). I think Guards became a neo-tradition in the late 70s and 80s. Bruce just mentioned what I have heard too, that Signal is essentially Guards.

So, I think when you see a Speedster in Red, there's a 99% chance it will be in either Signal (true) Red, or Ruby (Darker) Red. BTW, VW used Ruby for years. Both the Feb and March issues of HOT VWs featured a Ruby car. I liked the one in the Feb issue. The paint looked 'off' on the March car.

My wife says the Ruby has more of a Brick red to it, FWTW! I have tons of pics of Speedsters in Signal and Ruby. I like both colors. We don't see Ruby as often on Replicas. I think people often go for a Maroon if they don't pick Signal. I like the Signal I have seen on mos Replicas.. it looks very traditional and always buffs out nice. There are some replica Speedstersthat are close to Ruby, but I think they are often newer colors off other car makes. If you look at the VS that just sold in our ForSale Section, will that looks darn close to Ruby, but may be a shade more to a true red. (Looks nice).

I love black on a Speedster. I just decided to go a little different this time. Plus the swirls don't show as easy!!!!! My next choices were Stone Grey like Scott's, I love that look, and a Metallic blue that showed up on Coupes. I also found a pic of a Slate Speedster in stock trim (like John Leaders minus the GT look) and I think it was incredible.

Signal red and Guards red are different colors. I had a sample of each from Wilhoit when trying to select a color for my car. I could not tell the difference, but Michele could 100% of the time. The Ruby Red is more "smooth" or deeper or slightly more purple? to me. lovely color and if Michele would have seen that color, I would'nt be driving a black car. Great choice Jim. Thank the wife!
Dale,

Did you mean that Ruby Red and Signal Red are differant? Yes, agree to that but you wrote that Guards Red and Signal red are differant. Is that what you mean? I have looked at both and to me they appear the same color, sometimes a paint shop will have a little differant shade because of errors in mixing, but they look the same to me. There is a restored Signal Red Speedster in the showroom floor at the Porsche dealer in Bend, Or and it looks like Signal/Guards Red to me.

Bruce
Bruce,
they are different colors. There is a slight difference in the hue, or the ...crap, some color value. From across the room, I could mix them up and Michele would correctly identify which red was which. I would then give her a cookie. Your problem is you are a guy. It is a well know fact that guys can only see colors as Red, Blue, White, Silver and some greens and some oranges.
