Here's a pic of my new CB Engine Type-1 : 12 cylinders, 6300cc's, 430 HP......... a TIV Tamer. Right now Henry is working on getting this to fit with the 3" forward concept, We are also looking at old Tommy Ivo's Salt Racers for ideas to get this hooked up and ready to go.

Looking forward to the lunch and admiring the eye candy. Your Speedster looks great. And I like the numbers on our engines. But, I think the 2165 is a strong engine. Here's a Beehive shot of our cars, and sure enough, you are in the lead. This one shows off your Silver! (I'll send you my trip plans Brooks.)

Steve, thanks. Did your knobs show up yet?

Jim
Hi,

Well, $s are always a motivating factor for me. But, you are right, I'm sure that's supposed to read 55 amp. I've checked around with current IM users of the MSD and a Compufire on the .009, and they seem to be having a good experience with them as far as reliability. I have cruised the forums, and have read the Mallory buying points, which I think are good ones. It's a good question, and something to consider. Right now though, I will go with what seems to be working for others, and the way Pat set it up. Are you running a Mallory?

Jim
Jim ! ! ! You're engine is a genuine work of art, the spec sheet alone ought to be framed and hung in your "office'!

When I first looked at the pic of the rear of your car, my eyes must have been bent or something, because I mistook the engine bay opening for a rear window area and thought that you were building a Cheetah . . . with a massive type I mill and I was half way to an envy-driven plan of murder and assumed identity before I realized what I was actually looking at.

I LOVE the bee hives as well! You're a luck guy ! ! ! !

:)

TC
Jim, it's great to follow the building progres of your car! It gives me a good idea how my own IM-Speedster was 'born' 4 1/2 years ago. Your car has almost the same specs too.
When I look at the latest pictures you've posted I see the 'pointed' Porsche side moldings instead of the IM-ones. Is that correct? Are they mounted the same way as the IM's or did Henry use the 'original' adjustment hardware?
Jim, I noticed you went with the smaller valved head. For everyday driving that's the way to go (and the way I went). Mine was a 2110, with stock CB 40x35 heads that were ported by my builder, 44 Webers and a 1 5/8 exhaust system. I also installed a CD box and a Mallory distributor. The box and Mallory seems to perk up the car (for lack of a better word), started better and actually passed our 'air care' without valve adjustment.
Ron
Hi Ron. Yeah, I recall reading your specs and thought a bunch of what you did made sense.

I am going with the MSD/009 Compufire set up that Henry does. I always felt pretty good about the Compufire and 009 in my VS, and the T-1 MSD seems like a good proven system. I'll carry an extra Compufire module in my ER/RX kit.

I've read the forums and can see why many are very high on the Mallory set up. It all makes perfect sense to me. There may be a day I go to it... but right now the MSD/009 is my pick.

What you need Ron, is another IM with a nice aircooled CB in it, all plumbed for the new street FI CB is supposed to have in the works. When that comes out I may take a hard look at it. If it works reliably, then I might be interested in it. Still, the sound of Webers does something for me.

Jim
Hi Dave, I am going with 1:1 rocker arms. On the cooling I am using the stock cooler with a 95 Plate remote/stat/fan. I considered a 911 style shroud or DTM but opted out for various reasons. I went with the CB AL Super Case knowing that I sacrificed a little weight and a little cooling in exchange for the long term reliability/stength on the stroker and the high marks Pat and Henry gave it based on use on several IM's with them, including a 2332. I gathered info from a few users in the forums too, and found them to be pleased with it. I've read some of the forums too... You can find any view you like on the Mag vs AL cases. I went with Pat, Henry, and a few current owners... I'll let you know what I think from personal experience after I put some miles on it.

Jim
(pics of my exhaust to come.)

Mart, I'm glad Dale had the answer. I didn't. Patrick says Dale is a very smart guy, and I think he is too, except about microwaves and radios.

There are a few touches you might see when it's done. I'll take some shots and send them to you. BTW, Koenings was great to deal with.. very nice guys.

Jim

Dale, thanks for your explenation. I will send you some pictures when all my 'detailing' is finished. I just purchased two wiper switch units and bezels (Ebay) for my Carrera 'starter knobs'. Henry already sent me the little knobs in 'grey' (by the way, almost the color used on these pages) for a very friendly small price! Hartmut Mees of PaloAlto Speedometer has rebuilt a 200 km/h speedo into a Carrera 250 km/u. It's on its way to Holland now. I ordered a (replica) wooden VDM GT steering wheel from Jeffrey Fellman in Florida. I will redo my dash after the SVA-test in England (coming april). I will picture everything in detail and put it on CD. Thanks!

Jim, what kind of fan did you choose with your 2110?
Rob, about the SVA test, I sure will keep you (all) informed. I don't think it's to difficult to get an IM through the SVA-test in the UK. My advice is to find a kitcar builder who is willing to guide you through the process. There is a real kitcar culture in the UK and there are several proffessional builders who have to deal with the SVA daily.
I found myself a builder in Holland (www.racewagen.nl) who takes care of the test in my case. He already took a closer look to my IM and didn't find any real problems. The car has to have one more mirror at the right side (the Aero mirror f.i. is OK!) and the teardrop taillights have (temporary) to be replaced (all lenses on the car need official marks).
Because CB Performance (engine supplier for IM) uses older VW-engines as a basis you can get age-related plates in the UK. In my case my car would become a 1966!!! Wow!!! But overhere (Holland) they don't accept that way of 'aging' a ca. Mine will be and stay a 2000 (Have to pay quite some additional taxes for an almost new imported car. Do you understand my friends in the Hague?).
Mart

thanks for that. My email address is rob-jones@btconnect.com.

Apart from the items you mentioned you will have to do for the SVA my understanding is you will also need a padded steering wheel (so dont put the VDM wheel on until after the test. Also - and I think this is a real bummer because it spoils the profile of a period looking car I believe you need to install side flashing indicator repeater lights.

What about emission testing - will that be a problem with a type 1?

THe age registration business is a strange one in the UK. Since about 1962 when a car is first registered it gets a plate appropriate to the year of registration. You are then allowed to change for a plate from an earlier year but not a later one. When I got my Chesil Con D it came with a 1972 plate belonging to the original chassis, but like many others here I changed it for a an earlier number.

Anyway Mart best of luck and thanks again. To everyone else apologies for hijacking the thread for a peculiarly European problem.

Rob
Mart:

If you do have to install side directional lights, I had thought about that for my car here in the 'states, and thought that those from a VW Golf or Jetta/Passat (don't know what those are called over there) or even an Audi A4 might look nice. I have a white car, so I was looking at those which have a white lens and amber bulbs, but there are a LOT of variations seen on different cars that might work well AND not mess up the Speedster look, either.

Gordon
Mart, where the Speedster script is on the sides they are inserted in holes. What about getting side marker light that you can (stick) attach to the car. Run a wire (squeeze) through the Speedster hole. That way you may have a side marker that works, look permanent and when the car comes back you can rip it off and no marks on the car.

Whatcha think about that mon?

Jim, that flat 12 reminded me of Jay Leno's tank engined two seater they showed in Autoweek last fall. V-12, 1792 engine (that's cubic inches, not ccs!), 1560 foot pounds at 2400 RPM. Of course Jay actually drove his at the dry lakes. You don't want to know how much it cost him to build it. Good fortune with your build (it will probably take one).
Dale, about the side moldings. Did you only replace the the (pointed) fender parts or the whole set? With different words: do these fit the 'older' door parts?

Gordon, the guy who takes care of the test will use a small type of repeating side reflector lights. I haven't seen them yet.

Mike, good thinking! We indeed will use the script holes to connect them.

Thanks Justin. The trip up to IM was well worth the time and money. Henry was more than gracious, he put out the red carpet for Bill Steele, Dale Bates, Brooks Walton, Rick Davis, and me. I even had my own limo service when Rick Davis picked me up at the airport with a big late 40s Chrysler with a 350/700R/4:11 set up. The car was 4500 lbs of American Chrome at it's best. Rick and his wife use it in their business. I will post a picture later.

The Hellas are being chromed now, along with the roll bar. The Speedster is coming together now and all the parts are there. Henry's crew are working on Brooks' and my speedsters every day, and they are both looking great. I have a couple of pics of Brooks' car and Bill Steele's awesome Roadster that Bill took for a test drive and final adjustments. His Roadster's 2110 is like silk in town, and when you hit the pedal it wails. Riding and driving it made Brooks and I salivate.

I will post pics of the IM tour as soon as I get them sorted out from Rick and Dale's shots.

Vancouver is a beautiful city. I will be back there in 19 days to shake out my Speedster for a few days after Henry does the initial break-in. After a second break-in oil and valves, Bill Steele and I will leave on that Monday for a coast trip and then meet up with Scott S., Ralph C., and Eddie J, for a run to meet with Dale and others as we make our way to LA. The goal is to be at the meet hotel by late Thursday evening.

I am looking forward to you and I doing some cruising this Spring and Summer. Maybe we could go up to Hallet and watch the Vintage races?
