"That car is going to be fantastic. If I ever win the lottery, I think I might just have to support Henry's operation for a 911-powered Speedster and Carey for a Type IV-powered Spyder."

Thanks Cory!

The Lottery thing is kind of the same for me. I never thought I would sell my restored 60 356 as fast as I did or for as much money as I did but I guess it was just supposed to happen. One question. Why not put a 6 cylinder in the Spyder like Angela? That car is amazing........;-)

"Damn, The memories come flooding back. Its so cool to build something like that to your own specs. Watching, waiting, hoping for the lastest photos for Henry to post kept me up late into the night due to ESTime. Great fun, only to be surpassed when its delivered."

Very true.......each time I get an update and there are pictures attached I want to drive up to Canada and have a look.......here are a few more. The extra space created in the trunk going with the 15 gal fuel cell is going to be great. The floor is about 5 inches lower than the 22 gal tank. The frame bonding to the body should be done by the end of next week.

Dave,
Is that an M&K GT3 style on there? If it is, I'm thinking about one of those for my 3.0 (I just scored a set of SSI's). I was wondering what you thought of the sound.

As far as the build goes, I'm in awe! I guess if I could "do it my way" I would have to have Henry build me a car with THAT motor in it. That said I would have to up my life insurance policy, though you may be a little more responsible than I am. I don't know how you're gonna keep that thing on the ground let alone the road. :)
Angela,

Thanks....I still remember you looking over at Dale and me and lighting up the tires in your 550...........save a cookie for me.

Mickey,

Yes it is a M&K GT3 style. If you want I have a video of the motor running for the first time on the dyno. It does sound VERY cool.......;-)
Sweet! Yes Dave, I'd love to hear that video, is it on Youtube? I'm a little afraid of the noise but the few sound bites I've heard they sound awesome! I'll be talking with Ben at M&K soon about a muffler and if I go with the GT3 style I'll probably have him send me extra long pipes and I'll weld them on because I don't think the stock pipes will clear the rear bumper.

I was just getting some feedback over on that other forum asking if it was worth putting on the SSI's now or waiting until I do the rebuild. The car is running great right now so I hate the idea of having them and not putting them on. On the other hand I don't want to deal with potentially broken studs and being without a car for a week. I think I'll wait until we're out of the woods with the snow here and put them on then so in the event anything does happen I can drive the speedy.
I LOVE my M&K exhaust. I have a "peashooter" style exhaust with the 3.2l motor. I was concerned that it would be too loud and tiring at speed for any length of time. Wrong! Its deep, throaty, bass is something I listen to all the time. Its pefect, and I never tire of working through the gears. I left my headers stock. The SSI's may be somewhat lighter, but the flange is somewhat small and you acutally lose a little. Porsche knew how to flow their headers, and the stock set up works very well.
Thanks Howard. I plan on catching up with Ben at M&K soon to discuss options. Folks talk about the drone and how loud some exhausts can be but I'm not one of those people who cares about "comfort" while driving. I don't have a radio in either car I own and I removed the sound padding under the carpet in my 911 and it sounds just fine in there so I don't think it'll be an issue.
As for the SSI's vs. Porsche heat exchangers - I'm not educated enough to know the differences. I can only go on what I read and it seems the SSI's are better performance wise over the originals, at least on my 83 they are. Coupled with a good muffler I hear they're good for 15-20hp and a better lower end. I guess I'll find out. :)
I took the cat off my car and other than it sounding a little meaner and reduced temps (good enough for me) I didn't notice any increase in power with a cat bypass so I can only assume it's something in the design of the SSI's that adds the umph. One bonus is they'll last forever.
The SSI's don't give you the expected increase on the 3.2. They do help with the 3.0 on down though. 15-20 hp increase is optimistic. You will get some good mid-range torque increase, but I think the dyno will show maybe a 5-7hp increase at best. Still, its worth doing because of the driveability improvements you get with the SSI. My 3.2 speedster/Steve Wong chip/ stock headers/ no cat, dynoed 212 rear wheel hp. My 87 Carrera, 3.2/Steve Wong chip/ SSI/ no cat dynoed at 192. I think the stock header would have improved my numbers. But they are an excellent choice for the 2.4-3.0 liter motors from what Ive experienced.
A what? Oh, you mean that little red car that's been half apart for the past 2 years? I vaguely remember something about it. I think I still have it around here somewhere, I look for it. ;)

Nothing would make me happier than to have a "franken911ster"!!! But as I've said many times, I need to think about my wife and children. I'm not sure which would kill me first, the Hoopty or one of those.
A few more updated photos. The body is all bonded and glassed where needed on the bottom side. The complete under-body area will get a "Rhino Lining" treatment for easy cleaning. The extra space in the trunk area is sure going to be welcome on the long trips planned for this summer. Henry is going to do a special rear wheel opening treatment much like the Rick Davis IM-6. The opening will be moved back and lowered to make it look as the car is sitting lower than it is. The dash looks cool but North Hollywood put the wrong face on/in the 8K tachometer so now that it is fitted to the dash it needs to go back and be corrected. Yes the speedometer says 160 MPH not KPH. Now my wife's 86 Carrera saw 140+ more than once. I bet I could peg this little rocket if I have the guts.......;-)

Stop scaring me Dave!!!!!
Good Lord Man! Have you talked to Henry about putting in a suspension set up w/ aero like the Veyron has? You just push a button and the car lowers and the rear spoiler rises up, you could have him add a "Mach 5" auto-engaged splitter up front too. You're gonna need all this stuff with that engine in there and that speedo just staring at you saying "Go ahead Dave, I dare ya. What're ya chicken?" ;)

PS - Just got my SSI's today!
Dave, I'm really impressed. Not just that Henry and Co. are building a beautiful car -- I don't remember the last IM I saw that had any flaws -- but that you're this involved with it. It's going to be beautiful, and you're going to be able to speak more than intelligently about why it does what it can gettin' down the road.
I do have to recommend a number plate, though. Something Air Force, like Wild Bill said, indicating the "Stealth" mill inside ... say, like F-911. ...
I really, really want a ride in that car when it's finished.

Howard, I want a ride in your car, too. Like a 5-year-old wants a newly baked chocolate-chip cookie.
Thanks guys. I would have built it from a Coach and saved some money but after the 5 1/2 year restoration of the 60 Sunroof it's just time have someone else I trust build it. Henry is great to work with building my dream.

Mickey your going to love the sounds of the SSI's and M&K. I tried to upload the video of the dyno run but it kept hanging up.

Cory,

the plate is already ordered. 3.0 IM-6, in California you get seven spaces. I have a half space between the 3&0 a full space between the 0&I and a half space between IM&6 so I can paint in the details.

Dave,

I was just at IM this weekend and saw your car in process... Wow! I want a drive in that when I can. I'm working on speedster seats and a roll bar for track use in my car. The roadster seats do not let my helmet pass the draconian SCCA requirements of 1" clearance under a roll bar that must allow the convert top to be closed... The sppedster seats will put my but lower to the floor.

Tomm
Tomm-

I wish I'd have known!

This winter I took out my Henry-modified Intermeccanica speedster seats, and installed a set of Fibersteel "original speedster" shell seats (they sit right on the floor- my butt is literally an inch off the floor). My Intermeccanica seats are already lower than the ones in Alan's car, etc. by at least 2", but I want to be as low as possible in the car (I've got a long torso, and it's really important to me to be behind the windshield).

Anyhow, as you are aware, there's nothing inexpensive about IM speedster seats- but mine would be for sale. They're black leather, charcoal square weave- probably not your color.

Anyhow- good luck!
Now the "FUN" really starts, when you start seeing in come together! Step by step......... A truly "hand made" custom car. No need to apologize to anyone. Everytime I get into La Bomba Im amazed at how well everthing works, and what great fun to drive it is. You'll feel that way too. The ONLY thing that even comes close is a Ducati s4rs Monster.
That color is awesome! Your car is gonna be incredible!
I just dropped the engine in my 911 and I decided to do a completely stock rebuild ( other than the SSIs and M&k) because I have a hard enough time using whati already have. I can only imagine how insane that engine in that little grey speedster is gonna be. You're gonna have to get to the track on a weekly basis just to let it loose. ;)
Mickey,

I agree 100%. The 1980 3.0 motor I built is 100% bone stock on the bottom end and the only things not stock are a minor increase in size to the intake ports, 40mm Webers, stock 964 Porsche cam grind profiles, SSI's and M&K muffler. The whole trick is a 911 motor that is dyno tested at 235hp and will run for 100k plus trouble free miles without thinking about a rebuild or top end needing to be done.

It costs a little more on the front end but in the long run it is worth not having down time later or dicking with the car to have fun.

I will be visiting Intermeccanica next weekend working with Henry on the final details. I can't wait to see the color in person. If it is anything like it is in pictures I will be VERY, Very, very happy.

Soon it will be done and I'll be having some real fun.......;-)
Dave sounds great! That M&K sings, deep throaty rumble. I can listen to it all day. I dynoed my 3.2/bone stock with a Steve Wong chip/MK, stock headers and came out 212rwhp. I guess with a 15% loss from the flywheel, Im looking at about235-240hp. Someday, I may rebuild and punch it out to a 3.4-.5 just for fun. But in a car which is 700lbs less than the stock P car, YOU WILL FLY, down the road.
