Well, it has taken a ton of sorting out, lots of discussions, days and weeks of explorations, etc. but I feel I finally have all the details sorted out on my new build.

First off, I have to say that Henry at Intermeccanica is the best person I have ever done business with, regardless of what product or service we are talking about.  He simply knows his stuff, knows what the customer needs, and works overtime to make sure the final product is exactly what was envisioned.  And in the process, he becomes a heck of a good friend.

I've longed for a 911 powered Intermeccanica for a long time, and I now am going to get one.  After a couple of fantastic used IMs, this is my 'bespoke' automobile.

We are going with a 3.6 993 engine, a 915 transmission with Wevo shifter, and 1987 Carrera suspension, brakes, etc.  Henry was great in arranging for me to get my hands on what he needs for a 911 based Speedster and I can't wait for that first drive.

For inspiration, Henry and I are working toward something similar to this.  I've been consumed by this car since I first saw photos of it, and some of you will know it belonged to Matt Stoich.

I guess I'm a happy camper these days

Instead of going through all the hassle of getting your cars, setting up a place to race, driving a long way to meet each other, etc., why don't you two let me race your cars when Henry is finished with them.

I can bring along my good racing buddy, Crash and Burn McGrill, to help.  By the time your cars are ready he'll be out of the hospital and ready to race.

Too bad about his last test drive, but hey, $hit happens...right?

Bob, when your car is finished, I'd be willing to make an even swap for my 2013 Vintage Speedster, with 2024cc Type 1 engine, four wheel disc brakes, Chinese repop four-lug wheels, and replica Nardi steering wheel.

What makes my car so desirable is the modification to the instrument light circuit that allows the headlights to be operated without the switch smoking. Literally hours went into the design and fabrication of that circuit.

To show my good faith, I'd be willing to make this swap without even inspecting or driving your car first. It will be hard to part with my VS, but there's nothing I wouldn't do to help out a fellow SOCer.

Your buddy,

Mitch

Glad to see you going outlaw.  Question.  Are you going bumperless.  I asked Henry at Carlisle whether he could do a watercooled outlaw without bumpers and he said he was working on it.  My point is that there is a front cut out on current watercooled cars to let air to the radiator.  I believe this is also need for oil coolers on the 911 cars.  I would like to do a watercooled outlaw one day and would like to go bumperless.

Thanks, everyone.  This has been a long time coming, and I'm glad I am finally able to do it.  With my Speedster trade-in, it's doable for me.  And it's certainly not over $100,000, - a lot less, thank goodness!  I'm not going with a lot of the expensive stuff that Matt had on his, but it will still be what I want.

Yes, I have the copy of the Excellence magazine the car was featured in, and the pages are a little worn out from my looking and drooling.

As for a trade for a VS, Mitch, throw something else in (a house, cottage, airplane...) and I'll think about it.  But I do like how you set up that switch!

Phil - the car will have bumpers, but no over riders or trim.  Cut outs in the front for air to the twin oil coolers.

The stance is exactly what I wanted, but not sure about the wheels right now, as they ain't too cheap.

And Ron, I'll be sure to have Henry let you have a look at the car.

I told my wife that we could afford a 911 powered IM if I sold our IM (when it finally gets back on the road), sold our new F250 diesel truck, and sold our 5th wheel trailer.

She said that I'd be short a bunch of money after the divorce settlement.

Kind of put a quick end to that dream......

As cool as the Technomagnesio wheels are, and as cool as wide 5s are...

that's a 3.6L vaio-ram lump back there. That mill would overwhelm the Tehcnomagnesio 5" wheels/tires in a parking lot. As for the wide 5 thing: as much as I love the look (and I clearly do love it), the available brakes are something less than a machine of this caliber would require. I'm at the limit with a 200 hp Type 1.

Matt's car has a "pie" sectioned in to both back fenders to widen the car by about 4" at the wheels, to accommodate seriously wide rubber while still maintaining a "classic" body look. It was/is genius, and like the fact that the rear wheels are pushed back a couple of inches-- unnoticeable unless you know what you are looking for.

Bob, Is Henry going to do this to accommodate the enormous engine?

Stan

As you know, we were looking at a 2.7 engine first, but the costs were prohibitive to acquire one, and then I would have had to buy all the transmission and suspension and brake parts on top of that.  We then found a great package deal for all the 911 parts Henry needs and went with that.  That's where the 3.6 came from.

It is certainly a lot of engine, and will require a soft foot on the gas pedal (except when needed, of course).  I did do some checking with other owners about this. The one we got is non varioram, so will fit a lot better.

Yes, the rear fenders will be sectioned and widened, and I'll have eight inch wide wheels on the back.  Henry also modifies the rear wheel wells to account for the longer rear suspension.

It's a lot of engineering and sculpting, but Henry's an artist, and I know it will be worth it.

Don't think you can get 7 or 8 inch wide 5's I guess you can get them custom made.  I love them so much I think I would be willing to give up a little hp so I could use them with the vw IRS platform in the back.  A stock suby with 165hp would probably be fine with the wide 5's.  It would be nice to have the 911 suspension and brakes in the front but these also may incompatible with wide 5's.  Hmm.

Bob-

It'll be astounding.

I'm not given to half-measures. If not a 2.7, I totally agree with going to the other end of the spectrum and doing the biggest, baddest air-cooled engine available.

The sectioned fenders, etc. are the coolest thing I've ever seen. Seriously. You'll never regret this one.

Phil-

The wheels aren't the issue. It's the brakes. The calipers and rotors on a modern Porsche brake set-up are an order of magnitude better than anything available for wide 5, CPS included.

Hi to everyone, being relatively new to the list, I just thought I would mentioned that I just finished a build with Henry for a full Subie powered IM roadster. Bob, I think your on the right path, I have 6 inch in front and 7 inch in the rear with my new car, full 911 front end with brakes etc.

I think you will find that Henry is very cautious in this area and will match the 911 brake master cylinder chosen to the front and rear brakes so that the proportioning valve, the piston size, number of pistons in the calliper and the area of coverage of the brake pad will be match accordingly. It will be the logical way forward with that kind of power. You need to be able to stop without having to add lead in your shoe for more pressure on the pedal. Ray

Whoa! She doesn't mess around! That even made me sit up straight!
