Hi guys, I just purchased the following car off of Ebay last week:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-Intermecannica-Porche-Speedster-Replica_W0QQitemZ4601684849QQcategoryZ6428QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The car has a new top, new interior, new starter, new generator, new exhaust, new clutch and new tires. The owner just wanted to get rid of the car and spent no time trying to make his Ebay ad better. I was able to close the auction early with an immediate paypal payment. I feel as though I got a great deal!! The car starts right up on the coldest of New England mornings which really pleases me. Now, some questions.

The panel fit is great except for the drivers door. It stops about 1/8-1/4 inch out when closed. Can I adjust the door stop?

One of the clips on the headlight ring/rim on top where it should meet another clip on the body is broken. Where can I buy a new one with the clips?

The windshield is cracked and the owner provided me with a BRAND NEW WINDSHIELD from CMC. How can I install this windshield to "float" and keep the stress off of it? Is it a tough job? Any tips on how to remove the old windshield? It seems to be really stuck in the molding. How can I keep further stresses off of the windshield?

What size is the Nardi steering wheel bolt?

What is the redline?

The gearbox is soooo vague. There is alot of play between all the gears. I can find them easily, just vague. Is this correct for VW style boxes? I remember my old Beetle being similiar, but not this vague.

What are some good websites I can visit for parts and other information regarding my car?

Any other ownership tips would be great.

Thanks in advance to a great board,

David

Hey David, congrats. The door stop can be moved around. You will see when you back them off that there is a little play in the holes and that should get you to be able to get a tighter fit.

The windshield to remove is easy, undo the center post and the screws on the corner posts and the glass will come right out with the frame leaving you with the two corner posts sticking out. To order new glass (I did when I bought mine) you can order from Vintage (check Makers Tab on top). They sell the glass and awhack load of other parts you may need. When installing a new windshield it may be best to install a new base frame and rubber so pencil that in as well. When installing the new glass you need to be very careful with the center post. Snug and not tight is the key.

As for the Nut on the wheel, mine is a 25mm socket.

The clip for the headlight ring? You can order that from Vintage as well. May need a new BUCKET.

Vintage parts are: http://www.vintagespeedsters.com/accessories/

Enjoy the new ride....

Welcome David. You are right, this is a great forum with lots of news and views. Congratulations on your new IM. Among other questions, you asked:

What is the redline....This depends on the engine components and build quality. We would need more information to answer it. Some Mexican crate engines are not reliable past 5,000 RPM, some less. There are examples of "built" engines that will rev to 7,000.

The gearbox is soooo vague. There is alot of play between all the gears. I can find them easily, just vague. Is this correct for VW style boxes? I remember my old Beetle being similiar, but not this vague....Some of this may be just wear. I thought my new VS (2000 model) was a little sloppy and I bought a cheap, and I mean cheap, after market shifter and the shifting improved dramatically.

What are some good websites I can visit for parts and other information regarding my car....Look under the shops tab at the top of the page. Also, consider the Speedstershop dot com website. A lot of builders and technical guys hang out there too.

If you plan to service the car yourself, consider seriously purchasing the John Muir "idiot" book and a Robert Bentley manual appropriate to the year of your engine. Look on the library tab at the top of the page also.

Great to have you here.

ps. Planning on attending either of the Speedster gatherings this year???
Even when NEW the VW shift linkage was a little vague - but when things wear it get real sloppy. Start with the plastic/nylon shift rod guide bushing on the shift rod a couple inches behind the shifter. These are like $1 from a VW place (I use www.CIP1.COM). I grease the rod there too. At the rear of the shift rod near where it connects to transmission is next likely place. Remove the inspection plate under the carpet. There is a metal coupler there with a rubber insert. There are new ones with that red duralin/nylon instead of the rubber. Replace it with either one. Next is to replace either the shifter base plate or the shifter completely. There is a speed shifter kit (<$10) that shorten the shift throw. The base plate can wear as can the ball at bottom of shifter. Sometimes just a fresh coating of grease helps. The base plate can be adjusted around too. There are several aftermarket shifters (SCAT, Gene Berg, Empi, old Hurst?) that are constructed much better than the 30 year OEM one.
Congrats David; love that blue....If I were you I'd swap the wheels immediately for Fuchs style or wide five VW/Porsche style. That alone will make a huge difference in the appearance of your car; just ask Lambros Rigos, a fellow forum member who did just that. His car is looking killer now.
