2003 on a 1970 pan. 2176 built motor with 40 webers and 3.88 with .82 4th trans. Comb works really well. Have receipt for motor and trans work. I have a lot done to my car and it is a really great driver. I have jumped in her with a suitcase and have headed over the Sierra's to the coast without a worry. I would surely drive it on a 500 mile one way tip and know that the only thing that might be bad would be my back. It does have Jim's hub caps on it. I will include all I have for the car: luggage, bras, extra parts and pieces, and helmets.

No orange, Carl; that bad boy looks great just like it is, with or without a louvered lid!

Sorry to hear you're selling, Stephen. Have always loved the look of your car.

Thanks Al and to all that have wrote about my car. It is very well sorted and Carl if orange is your color, so be it.

I have a new job starting soon and just wanted to make sure I had some extra money in the savings just in case. Also, I have my '69 912 back on the road and all sorted out. I have been using it as my daily driver.

Thank you all again. Tell friends. At sea level, BADSPD is crazy fast.

Stephen- Thanks, I'll check your first posts.

PS

Found it- 78.4x94, Engle W120 cam, 40x35.5 (ported) heads (with dual springs), not sure on the rockers (1.1 or 1.25), chromoly pushrods, 17lb. flywheel (could be 5-7lbs. lighter for quicker throttle response), 40IDF's, no info on the compression or exhaust.

Anything over 2 liters is going to have enough torque to really throw these things around, so I totally believe you when you say it's fast! As I said in that earlier post (it was easy to find-

https://www.speedsterowners.com...500#2557660015492500 ) your engine should go to 6,000-62 or 65300rpm with power; how high have you had the engine rev? Do you know what exhaust is on it? Do you run regular or premium fuel?

another PS- I'm just rambling here so bear with me- you mentioned in that earlier thread that the trans had a "Super Beetle 1st gear". It's not unique to super beetles, but what you probably have is a 3.78/2.06 (1st, 2nd gears), and the 3.78 is stronger than the earlier 3.80 1st. For those that are interested (or care) VW (when they switched) started using that mainshaft in all transaxles, along with the other updates that came with it.

Nice recon work Al. I have not rev'd the motor that high. I would say 5800 top. I don't have any special exhaust. I think it is the standard VS style. if I remember correctly compression is 8:1. Running premium fuel.

That trans axle didn't last. The builder didnt do something when building it and ended up ordering me one from Rancho. Now it is stock with the different fourth gear and final drive.

I consider anything over 2 liters that revs to 6,000rpm (with power) the perfect engine for these cars! The displacement will give great bottom end/lower midrange and there's enough giddyup in the higher rpms' to have some real fun as well. Great to hear you've had the pleasure of stretching it's legs. Sorry to hear the trans didn't last; that's always a bummer having to do things twice. Not only the cost of the trans, but then there's the re&re as well.

I can see 2 exhaust tips coming from under the car. Any better pics of the exhaust?

PS- In that earlier post you thought the rockers were hitting the valve covers. Did you ever figure out if that was the case (you would see marks on the insides of the covers), or were they just noisy because of excessive side clearances?

And again, sorry to hear you're leaving the fold; what's next?

And another PS- the Sport Haus ad reads it has a 5 speed? alloy wheels are an option?

To expand on my post above- when shifting from 3rd to 4th at 3500rpm with the 1.31- .89 the rpm's drop to just under 2400 (2373)rpm. With the .82 4th gear engine speed drops to almost 2200 (2186) rpm, but with the 1.26/.82 combo it only drops to just under 2300 (2275). No info on which 3rd is in the transaxle?

Al,  I don't know. The only hole I have is between 50-55. Easy to fix.  Don't drive at those speeds. Only had to deal with it once when coming back from the bay on hwy 88. Guy in front on me wanted to be right in that speed range except when we got to a passing lane, then he wanted to do 90. So easy fix. I pulled over and had a soda from the cooler.

great job on the numbers. At sea leave the torque of the motor pulls strong even in the 50-55 range in 4th. Even pulls from 45mph And gets above the hole fast.

I was in Reno on Thursday and Stephen was nice enough to bring his speedster by for me to look at. I must say, it is a really nice car. The car felt like it had everything sorted out on it and would be a car you can just get in it and drive like a modern car. It has a good looking stance to it and drove realy well, It has a nice small shift throw to it, so you don't hit your knees or the instrument panel as you shift.  This car will be great in anyone's garage, now I just need to make room in mine.

The car is an attention getter, when I left he had a few people starting to gather around.

By the way, I did not feel any dead spots while driving it, but who drives 50-55 now anyways.

If I didn't have my silver Speedster I'd be all over your car Stephen.  It's very nice.  I met a guy at a recent car show and he said he was interested in a Speedster.  I'll forward this page to him.
