I wonder if I could get an iPhone app to run my heater........

Start it up from inside the house and the car would be warm by the time I walk out to the garage!

Now, to expand on a previous post from our "Dear Leader" (currently homeless but working on it), who took his precious time to (electronically) write:

"Wait. A woman cuts your hair?"

Yes, Virginia, one of my many "Kathys" cuts not only MY hair (and has done so since 1979) but my wife, Kathy's hair, my son's hair and both of HIS son's hair.  It's a hair-cutting dynasty, much like the Boston sports teams.  She is thinking of retiring in the next few years, and after that many years of standing on her feet all day, I can't blame her, although none of us know what to do after that - the idea of looking like Lane (or Tom or Paul or Danny) does not seem to be an option for me/us.

Fear not......We are tough Irish New Englanders and will cope.

On a brighter note for you'se Illinoisians (friggin spell check - you can't even slip into colloquial!  What would Damon Runyon think?  It won't even let me type his NAME!)

I can just feel it....

THIS might just be the year.

For what?  You might ask......

For the Cubbies to finally break their curse.  Just like the 'Sox did in 2004.

Hey!  You've got Theo Epstein - the greatest statistician that Baseball has ever seen, pulling in cast-aside players from less-enlightened teams on what they're capable of performing, given the right environment.  He did it for us, he can do it for you.  Many New Englanders were pissed when John Henry (that dumb-ass) pitched him from the 'Sox, but we can't think of a better place for him to land.  The 2016 cubs now have THE strongest defense ever seen in baseball and some of the best offense players seen in years.

THIS could be your year, long-suffering Cubbies fans....This could be your year.

All you need is just one player to unite your disparate bunch of self-serving egos into a TEAM, like David Ortiz did for the 'Sox back then.  (No, you can't have him.....he's trying to retire this year.)  Pull them together into a team and you've got a real chance, this year.

For Real.

Red Sox Nation is praying for you.   Give it hell.  We'll be there wit'cha.

And now.....Back to Tom's 'Resurrection of Natalie'  thread.

You're playing with fire here, Tom.

It's just a very small step to an automatic transmission, with the weak excuse that floppy paddle shifters are very 'sporty'.

And then, you're finished.

You start drinking instant coffee, eating dinner in front of the TV from TV trays, and wearing white patent leather belts.

If I were you, I'd switch that damned thing off and forget you ever saw it.

Oh dear, look at those shear shirt sleeves.  What is next? I swear my mother had pants like that in the  50's-60's. There was/is a name for those high waisted slacks.

And Lane where do you find blues jeans, that fit old guys with no butt anymore. I have taken to using suspenders, oh my.

In a mea culpa effort to get this thread back on course, I just went back and looked at the pictures of Tom's engine build (on page two, if you're inclined to go look) and realized that the engine designers/builders of the Subaru boxer engine have come a LONG way from the Type 1 case and block of the 50's - 70's VW boxer engine.  From a manufacturing standpoint, that is a pretty complicated casting, both the block and the heads.  Wow.  There's a lot going on in that engine.

If you've seen a naked Type 1 engine, it's pretty simple, although it was advanced for its' time.  We've all come a long way, for sure.

Tom:  You had a lot of stuff done over the winter, much of it pretty cool.  Can you do a post and collect the pictures of the more interesting stuff in one post?  We all know the engine upgrade, of course, and the Aero mirror blinkahs, but I know there was more stuff that some of us might have forgotten about.  I seem to remember a list you posted in the past as you were thinking things through - maybe update it for us?

Thanks.

Hi Gordon. I think I was pretty comprehensive in picture posting.

New engine & trans. Signal mirrors. Custom fan shrouding. New battery box. Surge tank. Water temperature gauge replacing cylinder head temperature gauge.

The only thing I didn't picture was the LED headlamps & improvements to the shift linkage (I have no photos).

There's also some carpet replacement covering old heater vents & knob, but I didn't figure that that would interest anyone.

I've gotten SOME seat time between crappy weather.  She drives like a completely different car.  I'm getting used to the new clutch, power and gearing.

One of the biggest changes is shifting around town.  Turning through an intersection, before, I would down shift to 2nd and power around the corner.  Now, with so much torque, I just leave it in third and brake into the corner and pull through in 3rd (of course 2nd is always there if I need it :-)).

Also, I'm more likely to cruise in 4th at 45 because the engine isn't lugging and drive through my neighborhood in 3rd to keep the noise down.

On the highway, it really doesn't feel wanting for a 5th gear.

Finally, I LOVE my signal mirrors.  They put a smile on my face every time I use them.

I'm REALLY enjoying the new and improved Natalie.  Yesterday, I drove around town for about an hour in traffic in 85 ambient and the cooling system is working flawlessly.

I need to replace one Tenax stud that sheared off, my backup light is not working (too lazy to tackle this summer), and I think it's time to upgrade the front brakes next winter....but she's perfect enough to enjoy the heck out of this summer :-)

What a fantastic ride that just keeps getting better!

Thanks as always Carey!
