Hi all,  the day went very well.  Unfortunately, the train arrived in Niles, MI 1/2 hour late and Carey was waiting with Natalie.  We drove back to S.E. together and then I headed for home.

While I was there, I snapped a photo of Joe's car for him (I sent to him by email) and also a shot of Trahn's car through a small window in the paint booth.  See below.

Here's the report on the upgrades:  In a nutshell, she feels like a brand new car.  If I had cushier seats, I would think I was driving Jack's car.  It was so comfortable I sometimes forgot that I was driving a speedster.

- Rear disc brakes.  Noticeably better, particularly on hard stops.  No more locking up the rear wheels.  Also, the parking brake feels really good.  I haven't had a chance to test while parked on an incline yet, but I suspect it will work great.

- Heat routed to rear bulkheads - Better than expected.  It was in the upper 30's and the car was comfortable.  It is  definitely what I needed for getting to and from storage and to and from Carlisle, etc.

- Heated seats - work great and add to the comfort.  Not only were they great in the cold, I think they will be good for top down driving when it gets nippy.  When you live in Michigan, you tend to push the top-down driving envelope.

- Side curtains - Probably the best side curtains that can be accomplished on a Speedster.  No pulling out at the top. Easy to open and close. Seal well.  I knew the visibility would be improved, but it's like they're not there at all. Very impressive.  Carey also added straps to my top that wrap around the metal arms and snap to themselves to keep the top from lifting away from the side curtain at speed.  This was an unexpected nice touch.

There were quite a few miscellaneous things that would only be noticeable to me and they were all executed flawlessly.

I thought I heard a new speed-dependent noise as I was making the last u-turn near my house, but I hope that I'm imaging things.  Last year, after the long winter, I had some noises that seemed to work themselves out after driving awhile.  I'll report back.

Carey's shop is humming with lots of cars in process.

Unless this noise turns into something, I feel that the car is really sorted now except for the paint, and, to be honest, when I see her in person, I think that the paint is okay too :-)

Very happy with the upgrades and the customer service that I always receive from Carey.

Trahn

Oh yeah, Cory, I plan to ship you my old side curtains in the morning. I'll email you with the shipping cost and tracking info.  You can pay me by PayPal or check or beer at Carlisle :-)

You and I need to get together some day man.  I really would like to see your car.  I am still not 100% comfortable in a long distance cruise yet but I am getting there!

Noise is not an issue.  I drove from Dearborn to Grosse Pointe and back to visit Bill Demeter this morning and all is well.  Natalie is back in my garage where she belongs.

I hope that this was my last winter in Detroit, but it sure is nice to be able to store my car with Carey and get everything sorted over the winter.  Hopefully, next winter, I'll be crying the top down weather most of the time, too far from Bremen blues with Lane :-)

They really work nice.  With the heat rerouting to the rear bulkhead, Natalie now gets warmer faster than my daily drivers.  Not quite as warm, ultimately, but faster.  However, the combination of the improved heat and heated seats is really nice.  I can't imagine you needing them where you live.

The noise came back later this morning when I made another sharp left turn at a median turnaround (There are a lot of these in Michigan.  We call them Michigan lefts).  Carey and I traded emails and he thinks it might be the right front wheel bearing.  The noise is not very loud (otherwise Carey would have heard it when he was doing his test drives) .  I'm off to Bill's again this Friday to check it out.  I can't say enough how lucky I am to have him around. I hope it's just a matter of grease.

Thanks David, but I don't think so.  The sound starts during a hard left turn, but continues after the turn for quite awhile.  The noise is coming from the right front, so I think Carey's on the right track.  Bill should be able to get me straightened out of Friday.  At least I'm hearing it early in the season before it's top down weather and the trip back and forth to Bill's is much more pleasant now :-)

David, I discounted this idea, but am now reconsidering.  Carey checked my wheels when they were there when he adjusted my steering, so unless the bearing went out on the way home, it is very unlikely.  2nd, I think I remember hearing something last summer.  3rd, I replaced my speedo cable on the way home from Carlisle 2 years ago when the original one broke. In a effort not to kink it, I didn't secure it to anything.  4th, I only hear the noise on really hard left turns, like left-hand median u-turns.  I will get out there this afternoon and take a look.  Maybe just a tie strap and, possibly, a new speedo cable (I shouldn't use that word, it always reminds me of old European guys on the beach) and I will be in business.

Good news and bad news.  The good news is that I did a great job of routing my speedo cable 2 years ago.  That's not it.

I went out driving (btw, in the 30's here and the car is a blast to drive with the new side curtains, heat mod, and heated seats!) and tested right and left turns accelerating, decelerating, with and without engine braking, and hard, straight line stops.  Only hear the noise on hard left hand turns while decelerating (easier to hear without engine braking) on the right side.  On hard left turns while accelerating, I can't hear anything, but that's probably due to the engine noise.  No noise on straight line stops.  I suspect that I wouldn't hear anything with the top down.

I take a lot of hard left-hand u-turns when there is no traffic and sometimes hang the rear end out a little :-).  It's one of the few thrills that I get here in the flatlands.

Since the noise can only be heard during pretty hard load, I doubt Carey would have heard it on the lift or test driving my car in a more respectful manner (maybe Cory would have heard it if Carey would have actually let him drive my car while visiting....thanks again for that Carey :-)).

Off to Bill's tomorrow afternoon for diagnosis.  Not what I was hoping for, but a fun way to spend the afternoon anyway.  It sure is nice being retired sometimes, btw.

I love YouTube.  Even clueless f's like me can learn how to do stuff http://youtu.be/201bBtleorY

Got my parts minus one seal (I'll use that for the left side) and they should have that in from the warehouse tomorrow morning.  $45.

1972 VW Ghia with disc brakes for reference from Carey.

All set to head to Bill's around noon tomorrow to tackle this sucker.

It's in the 40's and sunny now.  Almost shorts weather for Michigan :-)

Good news.  Found the problem.  Right inner wheel bearing had some pitting.  Changed the outer bearing and inner seal, but, unfortunately, the iD of the new inner bearing was just a tad too small to fit all the way on the spindle.  Bill put some calipers on the spindle for me and Carey is shipping me a new bearing that meets this spindle OD.  Bill greased it up with his super dooper bearing grease and we put it together so I could drive home (about a 45 minute drive).  The noise was greatly diminished.  I'm happy, found the problem, the car's safe to drive, and it is a rather easy fix.  I'm getting off with the price of parts and a little hot rod polishing for Bill as a means to work off my debt :-)

On a completely unrelated noet, I drove with the top up and side curtains in and exercised the new heated seats, heat with and w/o blower, heat off, and finally side curtain vents popped out all in the same day and all is brilliant!  No longer will I avoid driving it with the top up!
