Last I heard Jake Raby was the US distributor for Subygears.  I have a few sets of their 4WD to 2WD parts in stock for a project we are working on, but you can't do that box on Tom's chassis.

In one of our new projects we'll be using the Subygears stuff, but in a mid engine configuration.

I am waiting to hear more about the rear engine setup, but it is my understanding that the reverse cut ring and pinion effects the way the oil is slung and can possibly starve 5th and reverse.  I don't recall where I read it, but some guys had pulled their boxes apart after failure and those gears were blued!

I don't know if Jake still frequents the forums but if he does maybe he can comment on that, as well as his involvement with Subygears (if he still is).

On our "Suby Spec" VW boxes we have Rancho build the "best of the best" gearbox at almost $5K with a full custom Weddle gear set to match your engine's hp/torque.

What are best color options for interior and top with stone grey?

Joe,

Stone grey and green is a possibility. John Willhoit just sold this car again (he restored it). I saw it -- it was AWESOME.

Stone grey and red is my favorite:

I never much cared for this color before, but now I love it. It is one of Carey Hines' favorites too. John Willhoit owns a 59 Carrera GT in stone grey. The only one ever made in that color...it has a black GT interior.

There were 2 stone grey coupes at John Willhoit's when I last went to check on my car and have lunch with John. Both had red interiors, IIRC.

Thanks Carey.  I actually like the idea of using a type 1 4 speed vw tranny or a Porsche 901 or 915 tranny.  Sure its not as precise as a Subaru 5 speed but its a main connection to the car.  Makes it still feel old school.  I personally like my 4 speed vw tranny bolted to my modern water cooled engine.  I wish it was a 3.44 instead of a 3.88 or better yet a 901 but I still like the old school feel.

Type1s shift a lot faster than either a 901 or a 915, from my experience. I'm pretty happy with my Jamar rod linkage in mine, but that's apples and oranges. The CSP and Vintagespeed seem like the ticket for you Speedster folks.

Carey, I didn't know there were internal issues with the reverse Subarugears Ring and Pinion. Thanks for that heads-up.

Just, again: The Type 1 VW trans with a 3.44 R&P and stock gears gives a nice range for the Sube. Mine's a .92 4th and it's 70 mph at 3000. With the .89 it'd be a little more dip on the upshift, and 75 mph at 3000 rpm.

Third goes to 100 mph.

I say again: With a stock-geared VW transmission and a stock 2.2 N/A Suburu engine, third gear tops out at over 100 mph.

Then you shift to 4th gear. Where you go from there is between you, your brain and your balls.

Why would anyone need a 5th gear?

Ah, right! Cuz it's there! Because why not drop her to 2300 at 70 mph? Well, why not? It's only $5,000 and a couple fried gears in a year or three when it breaks.

Meantime, think how much quieter highway cruising will be.

And your top speed might go up from 145 to 152! Haven't we all been there, boogie boarding down I-15, firewalled at 143 and just keeping up with that Boxster until he drops his in 6th and pulls slowly away?

That cannot be allowed to happen, amiright?

Pay any price, boys. Bear any burden.
