Was headed to the Mid-America event Friday with another friend that has a type 3. We had decided to caravan just in case of trouble. I decided to tow dolly the speedster so I wouldn't look like a lobster after the four hour trip. I was on the verge of not going because the speedster needed a new set of tires after its long hibernation and I just had not gotten to it yet.
We made it about 100 miles when the left rear tire on the speedster let go. Luckily I keep a close eye on things when I tow ard saw it happen. I was in the passing lane and was lucky enough to have enough shoulder so I could shut it down quickly. Just happens I was at the exit to my parents house as well. Because I saw big chunks flying off, I knew it was a catastrophic blow-out. Had visions of shredded fiberglass everywhere. Luckily, there was no damage to the speedster except a couple minor scratches.
Had to wait till morning to get to a tire shop so I decided to forget Effingham and went to a local show instead. The old tire were too big for the car, sat in one spot for 5 or more years and were probably old when the car was parked.
Moral of this story is never run on a set of old rubber. If you know it needs it, do it before you take it.
The new tires look excellent and make the car handle much better.
