Alan,
Congrats on the new speedy. Vintage uses Allante Vinyl that looks like leather and is very soft to the touch. You have the same color interior as I do. The Cow Leather has more grain and normally does not have the carpet on the back side. Here are the two side by side. The brighter red is Leather. Does not matter though, the Allante feels good too; just be carefull your belt is not exposed when you slide your A_ _ in the seat as it can scuff the material.

Alan,
Congratulations on the new car. Now when are you going to drive it up to Loveland so I can see it? Are you going to Morro Bay to join us in April? Shoot me a note and we will get together and talk Speedies.
Happy Trails,
Dusty

And next year, when Dusty and the LMS make their bi-annual trip to Carlisle, you can caravan along with them. Hope to see you in '10.
Alan--well congratulations to you!! You will enjoy your Vintage Speedster! It looks like a great one too. Mine had 700 miles on it when I got it and now it has 6,000 "SHG" fun miles on it without a hiccup.
I hope you are slightly mechanically inclined---or at least trainable.
You will go through the same steps as we all do I am certain. Start by getting the main three books: The Bentley VW manual, The Haynes manual and the "How to Keep Your Voklswagen Alive" book.
I have spent a LOT of time documenting my car and would be glad to share what I have learned. I have made up a manual for my VS with parts types, specs, how-to and much more. Just email me off site and I'll look forward to hearing from you. I'm certainly no expert but I have gleaned so much knowledge from this site that I am able to enjoy and maintain my car.
If you could attend this year's Carlisle event you would me way ahead in your quest towards a happy relationship with your speedie.
"Welcome to the madness" and we look forward to hearing your progress with your nice car.----Jack

The car is on an enclosed transporter today . . .maybe will be delivered to my CO destination by the weekend. I have ordered a spare tire, wheel and full tonneau for it already. Now, I need to find a suitable jack and a few hand tools to carry along.
I have also splurged on a car cover for the rare occassions I drive it to work (no worries about vandalism or crime . . .it would sit right outside my window . . and it IS Durango, CO after all). Next, I found a nice new black doghouse fan shroud and a set of reproduced 356 decals for the engine bay. I also have the missing little round "Meister Shieffen" (sp?) badge for the dash and the Custom Koachwork badge for the side. I got both from Klasse 356. I am having a good time filling in the gaps on this already authentic looking Speedster.
I do own the John Muir book and have some experience with flat fours as I owned a dual-carbed KG in college. I also recently enjoyed reading the Denis Jenkinson book again for about the millionth time.
Here's a question for all of you . . . what is the age range of Speedster owners out there? I am 44, btw.
Cheers,
Alan

About the interior. I was able to BARELY rip a tiny piece of the material from the edge under the back "seat" panel, and it had really long fibers that looked exactly like leather fibers. The material is super tough and the back side of it is NOT uniform at all. Plus, it smelled like leather when I put my nose down to it.
Bravo to the chemists that are making synthetics so good that it is really hard to tell the difference, but I'm pretty convinced that those seats in my car once belonged to something that had a face. :) Even despite the fact the seats have carpet on the back. I could be wrong though . . it has happened before. Either way, nice seats.

Sounds like the "Madness' has already started taking over your sensibilities. As Lane says, 'resistance is FUTILE'!

"Age range", huh? Erm, the rest of us are in our late 20's. Yeah, that's it.
Naw, I'm comin' up on 53. MUSBJIM is ageless (a guamanian thing), and Vince is older than dirt.

My head is about 27, but it's trapped in this rotten old body that is at least four decades older. Maybe I'm a replica? No - if that were so, my head would be old and my body would be new. So am I an un-replica?
I am not magnetic, and did wear polyester for at least half my life.

I'm old enough to know better and young enough to do it anyway.
Steve still isn't old enough to know better.

Hmm . . . .The car is trapped in an enclosed transporter in Burlington, CO . . .about 8 hours from my place here in the 4-corners ares. March is still winter in Colorado, you know . . . so the car sits on the other side of two icy mountain passes.
So . . . what to do, but shop for junk to go with this car. Yes the madness has started. Deerskin driving gloves, a ridiculously priced 135R15 tire and wheel. . . tonneau cover from Vintage . . .enough spares for lots of tune-ups and oil changes. A nice repro tool kit . . etc. etc. etc. Oh yeah, and some glasses from the 50's that make me look like Buddy Holly -- replica glasses of course!
EBay is the Devil.

Congrats, Alan.
I got mine from VS in 2006. I have all the same...yes...all the same stuff as your Speedster (except I had the interior in ash gray leather.)
I had it shipped to Georgia where I was at, and when I relocated to Dallas, I drove it all the way there without any problems. If my back could handle that lil' crouched position for another day, I'd be in California.
Excellent purchase!!!
I got mine for 24K with 90 miles on the odo when I took delivery (excluding shipping, of course.)
Umm...I am 34...hopefully not too young for this amazing crowd~~ :D

Corrections on my Speedster. I got it in 7/2004...goodness...I had it 2 more years than I thought. Nonetheless, it's still only 4000 some miles on it :D
I'm afraid that you may be too young, Eddie. The only way to fix that is to join us in Carlisle and buy a round of beer.
All this talk of age is making me tired and old !!! I think I am still 43 but LMS and I have been married for 45 years now (How the hell did that happen???) She refuses to say her age and each year I present her with a birthday cake that says "Happy Anniversary ... of your 36th Birthday". Now the grandkids say "Gramma, you can't be younger than momma" and she responds "Quiet kid, your mother is adopted". What are we gonna do with these women??!!
Alan, The offer to come to Loveland to spend time driving our part of the mountains and talk Speedsters is still open. Also, we are leaving for Morro Bay on April 21 and you are welcome to caravan out there with us. Drop me a line at DustyJohn AT aol.com. Welcome to the madness ! (Don't pay any attention to ANYTHING posted by Vince or Gerd)
One more note of caution ... buy Lane a beer and then avoid him for the rest of the day ... you'll be less confused and your cheeks won't hurt from keeping up with his grin.
Happy Trails
Dusty and the Lovely Miss Sharon

After a week of waiting, the car is finally here. It came off the transporter yesterday without a scratch. It was on the second level of an enclosed transporter for one week and there wasn't a single oil drip from either the tranny or the engine on the Suburu WRX below it! No drips yet on my garage floor either. The car runs strong at my altitude -- which should make it somewhat richer. I will keep an eye on the plugs and exhaust though. There is just the slightest muffled popping in the exhaust note at about 2800 rpm, but only withOUT having my foot on the gas. There is no run-on or backfires, etc. It is a Volks Brasil engine with Kadrons. So far . . .so good. So far, the engine has not gotten hot enough that the dipstick is anything beyond MILDLY warm. The dipstick has never been so hot that I couldn't comfortably hold it in my hand.
I am going to do an engine service this weekend (timing check, valves, oil, etc.) So . . . .what flavor of Castrol should I use? Because it does NOT have a filter, I want to probably stick with NON-synthetic oil, but change it every 1500 miles.

Allan--congrats on receiving your car----you are starting a love affair that will last the more you learn about your car and keeping it sorted.
How do you know the engine is from Brazil? My VS had a new case made in Mexico, as Kirk told me.---Jack

The engine has the big type on the left (facing forwards) side of the lower part of the case (oil sump) that says BRASIL on it. A flashlight revealed all. Also, no SN on the case up by the oil filler. In any event, it is the coolest running VW air cooled engine I have experienced.

Cool! Change your oil every 3K and a valve adjustment every 6K.
Use only oil with zinc in it, or you can purchase a zinc additive found at most auto supply stores.
I use Brad Penn 20/50, but Swepco makes a good product as well.
Gotta protect these flat tappet engines...

Rotella diesel oil has zinc, I've used it for years
