First let me say, Hi! I'm new to the boards and just recently bougth a speedster. It's a CMC which is not in the best shape but the price was right and I figured, what the heck. I've always wanted one and never thought I could afford one, and now I have one parked in the garage. The car is in fair shape, needs a new paint job, but that will have to wait, the car still needs to be completed. The guy I bought it from spent a ton of money but never finsihed the car. I finally got the car running and tuned, but noticed that the exhaust was leaking. It currently has a Bugpack single quiet-pack, but the three bolt flange is warped. I would like to get a new exhaust ASAP, but I have no idea what kind will fit. I'm looking for an exhaust that is quiet, and that's about it. Any thoughts? Pics of your exhaust to help me out? Thanks in advance.

I would like to welcome you to this site.
Congratulations on your new ride too. You will have way too much fun driving that car around town.
I have a CMC,and my exhaust system came from EMPI,and is the "hide away" style because my car is lowered. I have attached a link for you,so you can see a better picture of the exhaust system. This one is from cbperformance and not from Empi. http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=398

CMC supplied (as a package option) the PaceSetter Monza 4 tip muffler. It is not the quietest -- but much quieter than say a Thunderbird or Bursh stinger header system. Picking an exhaust should also be tied to engines performance capabilities. If its just the 3 bolt flange warped try a few gaskets and tighten it back up. Do a search on the forum for TRI-MILL as it has come up as a decent system. How did your CMC come with dual engine grilles? Is it an OEM metal engine lid? Red paint looks sharp in your pictures. Do a search on sanding the gel coat (if its still the original gel cost finish) - you might be able to save (or delay) a teardown for costly repainting.
Brian,
Congrats on your new acquisition. Regarding the paint, you more than likely have the original gelcoat finish. I too, have a CMC (with a gelcoat finish) and took the advice from one of the old threads here and sent it to a local bodyshop for wet-sanding. They had it for 2 days and it only cost me $135. The car came out shining like a new penny. Its not a new paint job but it looks more than decent and will save you some $$$ for now.

Heeeeeey -- You've got another fish to fry. Big fish.
Looking at the pictures of the engine, I can see the floor of your garage. You need to make an engine compartment, quick, fast and in a hurry before you drive that guy too much.
I didn't know if you had ever had an air-cooled car before now or not, but figured I'd save you some pain. If it was already on your list, sorry!
Brian and Alan, you have mail.
That tin is crucial, Brian. I'm not the Wiz on that stuff, but I know about my car in pretty good detail. There are a number of options -- but we have different engines, so my stuff won't work for you. There are lots of willing helpers here with similar setups, and if it came right down to it, I could probably bend up some aluminum for you. I think off-the-shelf and a couple smaller, hand-made pieces are what you need.
Anyway, Alan is cc'd on the e-mail. And my number's on it, too. Holler if you want.
This is what I have found to be a multi purpose header system, I have used this sytem on many builds, has a nice mellow non intrusive exhaust note. Can't beat the value at $110.
The straight thru muffler is tucked up under the right wheel well. It's made for the Beetle but fits perfectly on a speedster.

Hi Brian & welcome....
I'm with wolfgang: yank that Bugpack header off, work it over with the wire brush, throw some hi-temp paint on it and then use all new gaskets including extra ones at the big flange. Next, add a new (bolt-up, about 70 bucks) Bugpack hide-away muffler and you're good to go!
I Agree with Alan about the simple 1 3/8" hide away. It's a pretty nice 1 3/8" extractor set up that sounds good (IMHO) and it is pretty cheap. I've used it a couple of times.
My wife and just bought a 2002 Vintage wide body. She loves the look of the car, but complains that it "sounds like the VW I had in college." A good sounding set of pipes (but not necessarily loud) are important to her, and she wants me to swap out the exhaust system ASAP.

Alan--do have any pictures of your system, and (I'm not sure how you are doing to do this) but could you provide a little more detail on how your system sounds?
