HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED,I GOT IN MY CAR TONIGHT TO GO FOR A DRIVE.I GET ABOUT HALF A MILE FROM HOME AND STOP AT THE GAS STATION.GET MY GAS AND GET BACK INTO THE CAR AND START TO GO AND THEN THE REAR END LOCKS UP.LIKE SOMEONE PULLED THE E-BRAKE.iT WOULD GO INTO ALL THE GEARS 1-4 AND REVERSE,BUT IT WOULD ACT LIKE THE BRAKES WERE ON WHEN I WOULD LET THE CLUTCH OUT.IT WOULD JUST STALL OUT.I FINAL GOT IT TO MOVE IN REVERSE AND THEN PUT IT IN FIRST AND IT WENT FOR ABOUT TEN FEET BEFORE DOING IT AGAIN.HAD TO HAVE IT PULLED HOME.
IT ACTS LIKE ITS THE REAR BRAKE.THE FRONT WILL ROLL,BUT THE BACK IS LOCKED TIGHT.IT WILL GO INTO GEAR AND TRY TO MOVE,BUT THE BRAKES STOP IT AND KEEP IT FROM MOVING.ANY IDEA WHAT IS WRONG OR WHAT I CAN DO TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS.
I CHECKED THE E-BRAKES IN THE REAR AND THEY LOOK TO BE WORKING FINE.THEY MOVE BACK AND FORTH WHEN YOU PULL THE HANDLE AND DON'T SEEM TO BE THE PROBLEM.COULD IT BE THE REAR TRANSMISSION.THE CAR HAS ABOUT 50 MILES ON IT.

OK,I GOT OUT THERE AND PULLED THE BRAKE LINES TO THE BACK ON THE DRIVER SIDE AND ALSO UNHOOKED THE E-BRAKE LINES.STILL WOULDN'T MOVE SO I REMOVED THE CALIPER,BUT THE ROTOR STILL WOULDN'T MOVE.SO ITS GOT TO BE SOMETHING ELSE IN THE TRANS.WHAT COULD IT BE.ANY THOUGHTS.WHERE COULD I GO FROM HERE.
Is there any gouging on the surface of the rotor? If so, can you remove the brake calipers from the discs?
If you loosen them or take them off the car (you'll probably have to take the wheels off) you should be able to see if the pads are jammed in. If the pads weren't set correctly and you braked hard, they could have misaligned and wedged themselves at an off angle.
Telltale would be any major scratches in the rotor at all, if there are only 50 miles on the car.
Might want to check all four, for that matter.
If the fronts work and the back are locked up, I'd suggest a tow home to inspect the parts. Unless you want to have the garage look into it -- if there's one at the gas station where it's stuck.
One thought of what will probably be many from folks here.
MAN, Hit the shift key off ALL CAPS. Was trans rebuilt or just recycled? Did it have trans oil in it? I'd remove one end of each axel shaft. Probably on closest to trand. There are 6 star bolts. If axel shafts turn with wheels elevated then its internal to transmission - probably a broken differential gear. If the axels dont easily turn or the CVC joint doesn't flex then its bad bearing, bad/incorrectly assembled CVC or something else out at end. Draining trans might reveal a chipped tooth or metal in the oil.
If it's a VW tranny... I had a main shaft lock ring fail, giving the same symptoms. To verify this, pull the nose cone and check the snap rings to be sure they're still in their respective slots....

Reguardless...you now have bearing killing steel particles circulating in the unit...Plan on a removal and clean out as a minimum repair.

If it is a snap ring failure...there are VW shafts that use nuts and spring washers...This requires tear down and rebuild...I upgraded to Freeway Flyer, in the Street Pro format...Takes lots of abuse when compared with OEM VW unit. (Rancho Perf.)

Good Luck....

Blake,
After you've drained the tranny oil, reach up through the drain hole with a screwdriver and try to move the collar that carries the shift fork to see if you can move (shift)it to another gear.
VW trannies (usually from speed-shifting) can engage two gears at once thus locking the tranny. If that's it, once free, it's good to go again.
Just a thought. I've seen that happen lots of times.
