Rob,
Having done many of the CMC's ( let us not forget a Street Beasts speedster)it appears that all the parts are there and useable but when you get into the build, many changes take place including the transfer of wallet funds which ups the budget.
As tempting as it is to offer to do your build, I have done my last, (many here would doubt I would actually say this) however I would be glad to walk you through the build process, saving you time and money. ~Alan drclockatpa.net
Robert,

There are some other assemblers in Western PA that may be interested. I have customers that have used these guys to finish our cars, and they have built many other brands as well. Send me an e-mail and I can put you in touch. I know that one (West Chester) is in the middle of a CMC now, and the other (Philly if I remember correctly) is in the middle of a TR RS60, so they may be a ways out, but worth a shot.
We're in Massachusetts and could do it for you. Right now I'm all jammed up with deadlines from my "day job" but I could act as ram rod on the build and have Todd and Charlie take care of the simple assembly stuff until I'm able to join in, but I think that the cost will make it unreasonable for you, ya know?

If you just can't find someone trustworthy closer to you, I'll talk with Todd about taking it on after the TR8 convertible is finished and I can have Robin run up a price breakdown for you.

How much has been completed so far? Is the body prepped and painted and the chassis cut just awaiting assembly? Is it a complete pallet kit and a donor car? Is everything there; engine, trans, wheels, tires, trim, accessories, just needing assembly?

Just wondering so that I know what to say to Todd.

No matter, good luck with your project!

TC
TC,
The chassis has already been shortened, the hood, doors and engine lid are hung. The gauges are in and the dash has been covered. The body is cream in color(in the gel coat) and is good shape. The engine a 1970 type I VW and trans are out of the car with only 65K on them. All of the lights are in the car.The next item was the door handles which I have not drilled the holes for yet. I don't know what the cost would be but, I am kind of working on a shoe string budget. I can send you pictures if you like.
Thanks,
Robert
No need for pics, sounds like an assembly with the usual (endless) fabrication kinda thing. Lots of glitches and hang-ups with a fiberglass body car, but it couldn't be worse than the TVR that we did.

Thing is though, the money thing is gonna KILL you, especially assembling a kit. It's almost like doing everything thrice. A dry fit with tape and protection everywhere to protect from scratching the gel coat, then the first fit, then (hopefully) the final, THEN the adjusting everything, you know what I mean?

Even at half price, $35 an hour plus a little off for good behavior, every ten hour day is gonna be $300. That's a $1,000 to $1,500 a week plus picking up and delivery THEN add in supplies and hardware. I wouldn't be surprised if it ran you $5,000. And that's only if Todd will agree to the labor cost reduction.

WAY too much ! ! These cars are more of a labor or love/hate when assembled in "just 40 hours" by the owner, or an expensive beautiful toy when bought from a builder. Paying by the hour for a shop to assemble it will be a heartache and disappointment in the end. Especially for those of us (all of us) who are on a budget, but still want a perfectly set-up and nicely detailed out ride in the end.

I'll talk with Todd (and Charlie) this afternoon now that I have a feel for what's gonna be involved.
Sorry,

Todd has been busy. I discussed all of it with Charlie and he wasn't sure about the idea. I finally caught up with Todd and he says that once the TR8 is done he wants us to finish up his BMW before anything new rolls in. His ride has been set aside for a while now so I can't fault him. Plus, I haven't even touched the interior on the TR8 and still only have half of the extra engine work completed. I'm being a little greedy here as well since I'd like to get my engine lid louvered and doors finished up for the SC Coupe sometime soon.

Looks like it's not going to work out for your project, kinda booked up for the Summer.

A really good job on a project like yours would demand totally attention, we can't give that right now.
Rob,
As much as it's tempting, I am done with building cars as I am expanding my car hauling busines with a larger truck etc.
TC has the financial estimate within the ball park. There is additional man hours than meets the eye. As previously mentioned I would be glad to act as your advisor and walk you thru the build process. You can... do this build!
Email me and I'll reply with my phone number to help you in your decision . ~Alan drclockatpa.net
