ok the current VDO gauges i have i am trying to replace
the center one, which is the tachometer is larger than the speeometer and the fuel/temp gauge
the tachometer is 4 3/4 inch
and the speed and temp/fuel 4 1/8 inch
i had ordered the 3 new gauges, but the tach gauge is too small
is there another company that makes a larger reproduction of the speedster gauges
or is there somewhere i can get a dash plate so the gauges will fit?
or does anyone have any ideas how to make them fit

My Intermecchanica came equipped with Porsche 914 gauges made by VDO. I will be replacing them with some Vintage Speedster 356-style gauges of a smaller size. I plan on having to reglass the entire gauge area then make the new gauge aperatures the correct size to accept the new smaller gauges. Of course this method will require repainting the dash.
Of you don' want to go that route, have a local sheetmetal shop create a gauge panel to cover the larger holes. Then make the necessary holes to mount your new gauges. Then have the new gauge panel "enigine turned". If done right, it'll resemble the dash layout of a Porsche 550 Spyder. Incorrect for a Speedster, but still retain a 1950s appearance.
You could also pick up a set of early Porsche 912 gauges- they look a lot like the 356 gauges, but the tach is the same size as the 914 version. Chrome bezels, green numerals and the speedo is geared for a 15" wheel. They will pop in your dash without any mods and hook up to the existing wires and speedo cable. most Porsche salvage yards have multiple sets sitting around.
I tried the 912 gauge idea in my '78 IM. The speedo and oil/fuel gauge fit nice, but if I were to also use the Tach, then it appeared the outer most openings were too close and it had a crowded look. I had to call Henry at IM and he sent me a Brazil made Tach. I did have to reglass the dash as Glen mentions, but it was worth the final look I got.

If I were to do it again, I would reglass the dash and buy a 3 unit set from CB performance.

Good luck.
