Next you need to adjust your idle mixture. The adjustment screws are located at the base of the carburetor, and usually on the outside (Weber or Dellorto). Back each of them out 3-4 turns. With the engine fully warmed up and idling, slowly turn them in (do one at a time), and CAREFULLY listen to the idle quality and speed. As you turn the screw in, you will hear the cylinder misfire (it's the one you are turning in, and it's running out of fuel). Once it misses, turn the screw back out until the cylinder fires properly again. Now, turn it out 1/2-1 turn more. You are done with that cylinder. Now, do the next cylinder, then the next, until you have done all the throats.

You are at a point just about all people who operate a motor vehicle are faced with.

You either are going to be relying on "Mechanic's" or you start "Picking-Up Tools".

Everyone who works on engines had to learn.

If your Mechanic wants you as a satisified customer he will usually explain what the problem was and show you how to adjust the Carburators as well as the Idle setting (If that is the Problem).

You need to learn how to replace the belt that drives the Fan/Generator or Alternator.

If your engine has "Ignition Points" you had better know how to adjust & replace them because if the "Points don't Open/Close" the engine won't run properly or stop.

The VW Engine is very easy to perform maintenance/repair.

Well put. Thanks for not razzing me about my lost mechanic skills. When I was a teen I rebuilt engines and did all the tuneup, brake stuff. When I got to be 21, I hated always getting my hands dirty and oily so I decided to make more money and just pay someone else to do the work. I told my 18 yr old son, who wanted a 65 Mustang. Either he learns how to work on cars or pay someone to work on it for him. He recently rebuilt his carbs... but I think he's starting to figure out how he needs to make a lot more money.

My car's off to the mechanic.
