Everything is well! I re-gapped the plugs to .032 after doing some research and the car runs great! Cold weather finally arrived in Southern Illinois, so I took the gas tank out and had it dipped (Redi-Strip process using alkaline solution). I coated the inside with the alcohol resistant sealer and repainted the outside. I have had good luck with this process for over 10 years on 3 different vehicles, one interestingly being an army tank tank. I am going to let it cure a few weeks in the house before re-installing. I re-routed the fuel filter to the area under the fuel tank rather than the engine compartment and replaced the plastic VW filter with a stainless inline filter. I'm just waiting for warmer weather now! Thanks again to all!
"I'm just waiting for warmer weather now!"

So we'll hear from you again in what - oh - maybe four or five months? Man oh man you guys east of the Rockies and north of the Mason Dixon sure got my respect for your dedication. If I waited that long to finish a project I'd have forgotton where I put all the parts, and probably forgotton what the heck I was even doing when I stopped!

Oh wait, that's why you took the gas tank in the house to cure - as a reminder? You put it in the living room maybe? Yeah, she'll remind you!
Actually, the tank is leaned up against the dining room wall. I will probably will have to move it on Thanksgiving day! Over the years I have had all kinds of "projects" in the house. Rebuilding carbs on the kitchen bar, waiting for paint, epoxy, fiberglass, etc to dry. I restored my old Schwinn Stingray Krate Pea-Picker in the kitchen several years ago. It's not that I don't have a nice garage/shop. I just like being in the comfort of my home, close to the fridge and toilet and the family, ya know. I am giving some thought to putting on the parka and going for a spin in the Speedster. The sun was out today and it was beautiful, although about 25 degrees! I envy you West and Southern coast guys.
