I just bought a 1986 CMC off of eBay some of you aim sure saw it. It was the car with the bad rear flairs it also had the 914 2.0 motor and the 911 5 speed Trans. I guess I need to know everything I do not know where to get parts and even what they should cost. I got the car home and got it started and ran it down the road to go through all the gears. It all worked fine and the car had been sitting for 7 years. I will start by taking the body off. I have been reading about the deferent types of kits and it seems that most people don

Try www.cip1.com for vw parts --- I've had good luck with them - good prices and fast delivery. Nothing wrong with the CMC product - they were sold as kits (until bout 1993 when they were forced to disband operations) so end result is up to the builder's expertise and investment. (Some claim they build or had build a limited number inhouse - I recalling seeing them at major airports on display so may be true). CMC had some questionable business practices which you can still GOOGLE articles about (or search FORUM here). High sales pressure like "This special price only good today." And other stuff like incomplete kits, backordered parts and exagerated shipping costs. Some of the add-on parts were minimal but you can easily upgrade those to real Porsche parts if desired. Why start by removing it from the body? --- see no reason to do that. Fix it up and drive it. Guarantee you take it all apart and it may sit that way for years (been there). The build manual is posted here in the library.
Welcome to the fold David you'll have a gas. These cars are a lot of fun and just what you need to de-stress. Mine is an early 80's as well and was used as a racing car, when I got it I decided to take it all to bits and roll it into a paint shop for some work. Then rebuilt the seats, sanded and painted the floors, changed the lights to halogenH4, did some motor work but it was pretty good to start.

I needed a carpet kit, windshield, windshield trim etc..and ordered them through Vintage. GREAT.

Needed to upgrade to discs in the front, new shocks, coil over in the back, new bearings, new drums and pads in the back, new master cylinder, new slaves in the back etc... all bought through www.cip1.com

As for the build book for your car, http://speedsterowners.com/library/cmcmanual2/

I printed all pages and have a book now...

Cheers, and you will have a blast. It takes all kind of Speedsters in the Speedster family and a CMC is a great example of the early days. Hope you enjoy.
