I am finding out that other than the air-cooled vw engines my engine is the most ubiquitous audi/vw engine ever produced.  Its roots go all the way back to audis produced in the 80s.  But the most common use for it was as the base engine in the Golfs and Jettas of the 90s and early 00s.  Its only current use is in base Jettas in Europe and of course in IMs.  It will likely be discontinued by audi/vw soon and Henry's source of crate engines will go bye bye.  And alas the Neuspeed supercharger has also been discontinued.  Could still maybe source a used one.  During my reading I have found out that the engine is quite robust with good low end torque and has a habit of sipping a bit of oil without consequence.  Nice to know.

Hi Phil

My 2.5L Suby had about 100,000 mi on it before the rebuild.  It's all stock and Dynos at 176 hp.  With the 4 speed trans it gets me to 60 mph about as fast or faster than anything on the road today.  I'm driving it almost every day ...... when it doesn't rain ....  and the engine/car continues to be smooth and reliable ... no need for an amateur like me to get under the lid to try to fix something he knows nothing about.   ... although I do change my own oil and filters
