I have been reading messages on Samba about a ring at the intake opening on fan shrouds of fuel injected engines.

One thread is here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=157096&highlight=ring+shroud

Supposedly this ring greatly increases the air flow through the shroud. If you read the last message in the thread, you will see that someone has started making new rings. The price is $50.

He also does powdercoating. I am thinking of having him powdercoat my engine tin and install one of these rings.

He also sells reproductions of the baffle that goes inside cylinder tin between the plug holes. Most or all aftermarket cylinder tin omits these. He also has reproduction hoover bits.

It is interesting to read on his website about his experimentation with dual plugs.

Hoooold on there, Baba Louie!!

That Velocity Ring has a venturii shape to it. Look at it closely and you'll see. It's very similar to the thermostat-controlled ring on earlier (36 hp) engines, but it doesn't move in and out like that one did. The purpose of the velocity ring is to increase the volume of air into the fan. It's a trick used on the inlet nacell of Jet engines, too. Just using something of a different shape from the Plumbing isle of Home Depot probably wouldn't work. I say "probably" because you never know what you might scare up at H-D that works wonders.

I've heard that they are pretty effective, just never seen one tied to a T-1 shroud before. Pretty trick! Time to hit the salvage yards again (before they're all gone!)
Alan,

I've been thinking of hitting the plumbing department to find a piece of plastic pipe the same diameter as the opening in a non-doghouse shroud.

I want to put one of those wire mesh things sold for non-doghouse shrouds on it. Then I want to fit it into the firewall cutout on my CMC.

Since my most recent mouse troubles, I am concerned about mice coming through that big opening into the engine compartment.
We rejected the clyinder tins on my new motor because ths did not have the peaces between the spark plugs and they even cut the bottom of the plug holes out , something else I hated

Mine have the ring just like they came factory on beetles destend for hot climates.

It's been around along while. We picked through a lot old shrouds to finf them and I drilled out the spot welds and put um on mine

Im not saying they help the cooling .But they don't hurt it
