I have ben using a cheap light from J C Whitney as a third rear brake light.  It was stuck onto the paint above the top end of the engine grill.  It worked fine and looked ok but the tape had to be replaced every year or so.

I recently removed the luggage rack for a car car show and really like the look without the rack but removing the rack made the 3rd light too prominent and clunky looking.

At one of the many car parts places around here I found LED lights that were on a strip about 5# long that held 5-6 lights. These are easy to mount onto the inside of the metal surround of the grill and are much brighter than what I was using.  They are almost invisible until they light up and really improve the appearance of the car. Not only are they bright but they reflect off the strip of metal inboard of the surround and you get double the light!

In the store, all these LEDs are wired up to a switch mounted on the box and a 12v battery inside the box so you can press the switch and see how they look.

The Speedster looks sleeker plus has a lot more brilliance when the brakes are applied.  A great find, I thought. I don't guess it was just the new brake lights but I was surprised to get "Best Of Show" at the Nashville, AR  show.  (It wasn't a huge show though.)

Chuck--are your LEDs the strips with the sticky back to mount them?  That';s what I used.

Here are some pictures. My Camera is not too sharp with shooting in low light without a tripod.  But I hope you can get an idea ohf how they look.

I was tired of the clunky J C Whitney third light and this is an elegant solution.

The picture where the lights are not on shows that they are hardly visible and you can see where I mounted them.   From the angle I shot the pix there is a big reflection off the inside of the lid even tho it's painted flat black. Since the strips are mounted on the outboard frame of the grill and point towards the next shiney

metal strip of the grill there is a good reflection off that too. The car looks better and the light is more than adequate.

I'm happy with the new LED third brake lights. Anything we can do to make these crates safer is important!

Did a similar thing a couple years ago and the lights continue to work just fine. Mine are wired directly into the right rear tail/brake light.

I ran mine across the top of the grill as opposed to your grouping on either side. Both configurations seem to get the job done.

Unobtrusive and simple. 24LED's in total. Stevie Wonder remarked that he liked the look of them!

Bob--I like your configuration better than putting the LEDs along the sides like I did.

I was blocked from putting them at the top by the screws and the slats of the grill which go right up against the frame of the grill.

I'm going to take another look to see if I can move mine to the top as you get much more light to the rear than I do.

Thanks for posting the pix!

Carl:

A strip on the left side, two rows of  parallel lights and a matching strip on the right, wired together and then to the right rear tail light. I simply lined them up so that they were between the vertical pieces of the grill. My car is a VS and they lined up perfectly.

I purchased the lights at an automotive store for about $15.00 and put the system together in June of 2011. The adhesive backing has held up perfectly in keeping them attached to the deck lid itself, so it has been a good fix to date.

See the pictures above.

Jack, the screws to hold the grill on mine are on the sides of deck lid and the grill itself, so it was convenient to put the lights at the top.

Bob--I think I'll drill new screw holes on the sides near the top and go your route.  I really like your look with all brake lights on.

One day 4-5 years ago I was discussing some ideas with Kirk and he said "why don't you just DRIVE the damned thing?"  That was a zillion hours and about $30,000 ago!!  Fooling with these cars IS what it's all about--right?  Of course--- oh, and the knuckleheads--can't forget about them!

My VS is 6 years old now but with the ongoing improvements it has never looked better or driven better and still wins trophies.  Of course that's here in Dogpatch where these care are rare. On the left coast it's pretty mundane, I know.
