Tom, nervous tic
I forgot that he said they were a bit smaller. Oh well...
The first 40 sets of VDO gauges arrived here yesterday!! They look GREAT!!!
Pictures for the inquiring minds.
Joe,
I emailed you the advertising "glamor shot" of the gauges on Friday. Feel free to post it here. (I can't access it currently)
PRICING:
I am VERY please to announce that the gauges came in at just under $600 per 3pc set (2/16/14) This is only about 15% over the current cost of the China repops, and over 50% cheaper than what it normally costs having them hand made by NH Speedo!!!
Most people WILL need to add a GPS speed sensor (not included). It is the standard VDO unit, widely available (including through us). VDO says the speedo can be wired to work off of a Hall effect sender, which some of you already have. I believe Henry is testing this now.
I can provide part numbers for the fuel sender and the oil senders in order for you to check compatibility. These items are still stock VDO VW senders.
The first 40 sets are already over 1/2 gone!!
Kevin just added them to his eBay parts store or you can call/e-mail directly.

Thanks, Joe!
Thank you, your dad and Henry for coming up with such a great design and product. How much smaller are these gauges then existing and is there a trim ring or something in the works.

I'm going to weep now.
I'd hate to add up what I've got in my NHS-fixed gauges, but it's into 4 figures. I've got the $600 Carey mentioned in my freaking combo gauge! (not that I'm bitter, or anything).
Congrats Special Edition and Intermeccanica for producing something really nice.
what sort of GPS set up do you need for the speedo? Bluetooth to an iPhone? Solve the trim ring issue and you will sell a lot of these. I am on my 4th Tach now.
Joe, They are 100mm, as per the original gauges. 5mm smaller than the older repros.
Stan, thanks
Major, it is a stand-alone GPS sender, hidden under the dash and hard wired to the gauge. So far I have only used the VDO version, but Hartmut at NHSpeedo tells me there are aftermarket ones cheaper and will work the same.
Carey, I think I have the NHS prototypes of those gauges in my IM without the GPS Speedo. I would like to add that so my speed is consistent when doing tire changes. Something you can provide? Thanks.
Marty,
Yes, I believe you do.
Currently I am not permitted to break up sets, but I can try to order one extra speedo if you want. VDO is not stocking any of these and only making them to order, in batches of 40, and the next 80 sets have already been ordered. If you'd like it sooner than later I can see if they will tack it on to an existing order. Just let me know.
Marty,
Kevin said that once I have confirmation from VDO on the single gauge order I can rob one from a set for you.
Are these now going to be standard in all your turn-key cars? It's something I'll definitely be wanting in mine!
Jeff
Yes, they are now our standard gauges for all builds.
Hi,
I have recently bought a set of gauges from a 912 for use in my rebuild. with our exchange rate over 10 to 1 to the US$, some items are just totally un-obtanium for us locally. I'd like to enquire if you would be able to offer replacement faces by any chance? The Speedo I just got is in Mp'h and ideally I'd like it in km/h which is our standard.
Pls let me know if there's any option to buy the tach and Speedo faceplates please?
thanks
No we do not sell just the faceplates. Contact Hartmut at North Hollywood Speedometer. They make several different faces for converting 911, 912, 914, and 356 gauges.
Carey,
What is your experience with the GPS receiver/sender? Where are you placing them in the Speedsters, can it be installed under the fiberglass dash or must it be openly visible to the sky?
Also, you mentioned "there are aftermarket ones (senders) cheaper and will work the same". I have seen units by Auto Meter and Intellitronix, prices do vary if people shop around but must be careful to make sure the specs match the gauges.
So far the GPS senders have been great with no issues. We wire them "hot" so they never lose signal. Otherwise they take a few minutes to "fire up" whent he car is powered down. VDO says it draws less than a stereo memory, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Mounted behind the dash and they have not needed a direct line of sight to the sky like in a steel car.
Hartmut will know what senders will be compatible and cheaper. I will only be using and selling the authentic/matched VDO senders.
hmm...finish my car with the new gauges that came with it in 93 ...or sell them off & get a set of these.....or put the automeater monster's from the unfinished street rod/drag car in it....hmm I got's an idea.. hey wolfey!! get a set of these and finish your car!!!! so I can see if thats what i want. Ill even help with the $$$ ($15.00)to help with the shippen!!!
Note on the gauge hole size and fitment:
Hartmut sent me some Porsche rubber grommets that they use to retro-fit 100mm 911 gauges into a 914, or maybe it was the other way around... anyway, they fit PERFECT to the gauges and they fit PERFECT to the 105mm holes in the dash. They replace the VDO seal and if I didn't tell you what they were for, you'd have no idea.
We are still making aluminum and stainless trim rings, but this is a very easy and cheap route to go, that looks the part!
Carey,
Can you show a few pic's of the rings. I'd love to get the full set but I do have the larger hole to deal with and I'm not sure how it will look.
Thanks Pete
Do I understand you to be saying that these grommets make the new gauges fit the larger, old-style holes? Hmmm...
Carey will be installing these in my car and you are welcome to inspect at Carlisle ...
That looks great! So let me recap to make sure I understand:
They fit into the larger hole with the help of the rubber gasket.
The speedo is now run by a some sort of transmitter that is fitted to the front wheel. This eliminates the speedo cable allowing us to put the speedometer where it belongs.
The other hookups for the other gauges are all the same as what we have now.
Do I have this right?
One question I did have: what is the GPS for? If the sender gets revolutions from the wheel, what does the GPS do?
Thanks!
All other functions are wired the same as the older VDO and China repros BUT may have different oil temp and fuel sending units, depending on what was used In your build.
How much for the set?
How do I go about ordering?
Is the sending unit included?
Gauge set is $589
Sending units are not included.
There is a package with temp sender, fuel sender and GPS unit for $178.90, or each can be purchased separately if you don't need all 3.
You can purchase through our eBay store (I'll link below) or you can call the shop and order directly.
That'll have to wait for me. My budget is already getting out of hand.

Ok guys chime in here please...
My car is still in Bremen and can have them installed prior to pickup. My only dilema is I am thinking of a new build next winter. This is still a pipe dream but... ya never know.
Someone please educate me on this. What is/are the advantages of these gauges over what I have in my 2004 IM?
Nicer looking? More accurate? Different locations?
2) Original diameter (replicas are larger)
3) Speedo is GPS & more accurate. This also means no cable which means that it's easier to put the speedo in the correct right-hand location.
