I have an idea for a new category to put in the black bar at the top of the page. The new category would be called "Travelers".

I got this idea after spending some time with Scott Cramer and his family in Atascadero, CA. My wife and I went to the coast for a day and spent an additional two days and Scott let us stay at his house. We had a great time and it got me to thinking. I thought it'd be a great idea to open our home to anyone from the SOC if they were traveling through our area and needed a place to stay for a night or two.

Say you were traveling to Yosemite National Park and your plane landed in Los Angeles, CA, you rented a car and drove to Fresno, CA which is about an hour and half from the park and stopped for the night. If you were staying one night here before you travel to Yosemite the next day you could stay here at my house instead of renting a hotel. Before your trip you would post your itinerary in the "Travelers" forum and if your travels take you near me and the timing is right I'd respond and invite you to stay here. You'd save on some travel costs and I'd get to meet a fellow SOC'er.

I think one of our east coast SOC'ers, Danny P maybe, is taking a cross country tour from the east coast to the west coast soon and is scheduling stops along the way. Instead of Danny getting a hotel for him and his wife in every city, if there are SOC'er who could host them you'd reach out and let him know. He could plan his travels accordingly or he could choose to stay in a hotel instead depending on their needs.

If you guys like the idea maybe we could get @Theron to add the category to the black header bar or even just a new "Forum" category.

My wife and I have a spare bedroom now that our son is away at college and when our daughter moves out we'll have another spare room.

It's just a thought.

If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

The first West Coast SOC event I showed up to went off without a hitch because it seemed like I already knew everyone there. I can't imagine it'd be any different sharing my home with someone for a few days/nights. It'd be more fun than looking on Yelp trying to find a place to eat or where to go to kill a few hours etc.

Excellent idea , Robert!  Even if it doesn't work out for an overnighter we could provide each other with "local knowledge"  wherever we live. Restaurants , motels and local stuff that might not be in the AAA guide.  It's also helpful to learn which attractions not to miss and which ones to avoid.  Even if we just meet for a drink or dinner it's always nice to put a face to the name.

Living close to the Atlantic ,we get a lot of guests in the Summer, mostly on weekends. If the guest room is open, you're in!
