Hi, I recently bought a very nice body from what I beleive to be CMC. The fiberglass is very thick, and there is steel throughout the body that the fiberglass is riveted to. It is very solid feeling. Doors are already hinged and hung. Initially I didn't want to go the vw route. I know it sounds kinda crazy but I want to mount this body to a miata chassis, performance should be superior in every aspect. But this does mean going front engine rear wheel drive. I'm not sure about going this route because there will be a lot of fabrication which means more time I won't be actually driving the car. Also, I have my eye on a '73 beetle with irs and a dual port 1600 w clean title for 1300 obo. I need info on how much to shorten the pan, where to buy the parts Meredith to make it road worthy (tail lights, headlights, etc) and other tips/tricks for getting the build underway! The engine cover was not included so I'm going to have to figure out what to do for a replacement cover. Also I'd like to post pictures of the body but I'm not sure how, its a widebody 356 speedster. Thanks in advance

www.vintagespeedsters.com  I would recommend you beg for parts here that others may have on the shelf as needing a pile of parts can and is very costly. The is - was a guy in Tenn. that sells a louvered CMC engine deck lid thta is good quailty..you have a long road ahead but you have a number of people here with good advise that you'll need on this site.

Virtually any year except the Super Beetle chassis (due to the McPherson Strut front suspension) will easily work.  Early bugs had king pin front ends and swing axle rear - more authentic to the original 356.  Most prefer later '68 up ball joint front and IRS rear for better handling. A '73 would be a great donor.  (Actually a Super Beetle can be used either by grafting on a std bug front suspension on or using the adapter kit that CMC produced back in 1990 (see CMC build manual)).  Donating SOC members can access the entire FF/CMC build manual here on the site.
