I have picked up a new 009, and have installed the Pertronix II electronic ignition on it. In trying to install it, I can't get it to stay meshed with the drive in the engine. It is not 180 deg off, and I have a new dist clamp and it is sitting flush with the case. When comparing the two distributors, the old one is about 1/16" longer, but that shouldn't matter too much. I can get the dist shaft to engage the engine, but it won't stay. I run it for a bit and bam, it pops out and, of course, the engine won't run. What am I missing?
Ron

PS. I was just showing my old distributor to my neighbor and pointing out how worn the two pins are...then he says, thats not worn, those are grinder marks. I look close. Sure enough. Somewhere in this engine's past, someone has welded onto the distributor pins and then ground the weld down to match the shape of the distributor drive in the engine. Has anyone ever heard of that before? How can the distributor drive sit too low in the engine? Is that a sign of another problem?

I switch the modified distributor piece that has the longer pins onto the new distributor and now it engages fine.

The drive is sitting to low in the case so it wouldn't mesh with the distributor drive. Regardless, if there are washers (like shims?) underneath, then what you are saying is, whoever assembled it didn't put enough washers under it. The important thing is that, yes, I did get it to work, and that you are saying it's being too low is not a big deal. Thanks George.
