I just received my new dual Brosol/Solex 34mm kit, and noticed a nasty casting flash inside both venturi's. They are pretty ragged, and sharp enough that you could almost cut yourself on them. That can't be good for airflow,, as venturi's should have smooth transitions, I would think. Has anyone else seen this ?? I certainly don't want to take these new carb's apart. I suppose it would be possible to improve the flash by polishing it in place,, with a vacuum placed below, to draw out any filings and grit particles. It is a shame to have to do work like this on new product. It is not really CPI's or CB-performances fault, as it obviously came to them from Brosol like this, and the carb boxes were sealed. Other than that,, the quality of the kit looks great. The only other thing I could ask them for, is some installation documents. But I am looking for good articles online,, like this one. Alan

I suppose it depends on exactly how much flashing is in there...

1/8" high? 3/16"? 1/4"? More? What about how wide?

If it were me (bearing in mind that I'm chronically lazy) and it was a vertical line of flashing that was less than 3/16" high from the bore and less than 1/8" wide, I would just leave it. The impediment to the air flow would be almost un-measurable.

If it's more than that, I would gently grind it out with a Dremel and a fine stone while blowing air through from the opposite side (using the output from a vacuum cleaner). In fact, taping the blower hose to the carb might be a good idea, as well as using a flexible shaft on the Dremel, just to make the job easier.

Actually, the flash is horizontal, variable is size, and up to a max of 1/16. It projects from the smallest diameter (26mm, I think) of the venturi, into the airstream. Working past the chokes will be difficult. I even have wondered about buying the new larger Hi-flow venturi's, available from CB ($7each). But that would likely mean some rejetting too.

I think I am going to create a flowbench, by taping my vacuum to the bottom, or maybe even using the kit's manifolds. Then smooth the flash from above with an appropriate small file. I am not in any rush with this,, so I can patiently plan this out. It just doesn't seem right to leave it as is. And obviously now is the time to correct it, prior to install.

Sounds like you know what you're doing - have fun!

You know, I was going to mention a Laminar Flow Bench as an example of how to keep them contaminate-free whilst grinding, but thought it would take too many key-strokes to explain the damn thing. Haven't used one of those since I designed inertial guidance systems, back in the 70's!

Now mechanical gyro's are passe in favor of solid-state LASER gyro's- now THOSE are cool!
