Thanks for the heads up, I know better now.

* hired Roy Henning to build turn key engine and replace transmission

* paid $5075 for the engine and $1300 for the transmission

* was paid on August 7th, 2013 and engine and transmission to be done in 6 weeks

* shipped them my car for the install fist week of October 2013

* engine build was neverstarted until after November

* December I asked for a full refund, they declined

* January I was told my car would be done by the end of the month

* February I was demanded to pay an addition $1450 to finish the job or else.....

* March sent Roy $1450 in a money order to finish

* April Roy says he has problem and will let me know

* My transmission will not shift to 1 or 2, reverse lock out wont work car only shifts 3 and 4.

* Engine will not stay running. I paid Mofoco, Roy Henning over $7800 for a new engine and transmission installed in my car and now it don't run and can't drive it.

I waited over 8 months for a 6 week job. My car drove fine over 1300 miles from Nebraska to Oregon in July of 2013 to a car show winning three awards. The car sat near the pond for a 7 day period and when I went to drive home, the engine overheated in about two hours of driving time. I searched for a way to get car home, rented U-Haul truck and tow dally and came home.

Found 5 companies that rebuild engine. I choose Roy because he said he would remove and replace engine and transmission for the labor of $750. So I agreed and paid for the engine and transmission in full and then shipped him my car 8 weeks later hoping to have my car back in a few days.

Shipping cost $1000 from Henry NE to MilwaukeeWI. Roy Henning has not kept up with his end of the deal. The deal was to have a new turn key engine test run and ready for install when the car got there along with a rebuilt transmission.

It should have only taken a day or two to remove and reinstall and test drive car. Roy Henning complained that I was at fault, everything I said is a lie, and he wanted $100 per hour for custom work to remove and install a VW engine and transmission. I sent Roy pictures of my car, the engine and engine bay, the transmission and axles so he knew what he was receiving.

My car is a VW pan with a fiberglass body bolted to it. So it is mostly all 1970's VW remove and replace. Roy has sent me aggressive emails, held my car hostage, charged me for parts and labor with out a written estimate up front, may have used my engine as a rebuild and not a new case build, rebuilt my transmission and it will not work, the engine will not stay running at idle.

I feel that I need a full apology for all the accusations, and a refund for not completing the job as stated. Roy has also had the nerve to charge me $20 per day for storage if I did not pick up the car with in 10 days of him stopping work on it. So my truck driver picked up the car on 5.16.2014 and paid Roy $100 for storage. I should be charging Roy $20 per day for the six months he had the car over and above the contract dates. I will have added expenses to have the car looked at and fixed correctly to make it drivable.

Micheal;

I see that you have already written a Yelp review.  I noticed that Mofoco's website says the are BBB members, contact them and file a complaint.

Most states have consumer affairs/protection agencies, I'd look into that also.  I'd ask friends and business associates for recommendations of an attorney.

Good luck,it's like pushing water uphill.

I just want to tell you a short story about MOFOCO and Roy Henning. I bought a new turn key engine and transmission back in August 2013 paid in full $6375.00 for a 6 week job. Sent them my car for the install in October 2013. Should have take about two days to install and test. Well, months go by with aggravated emails sent to me, then they asked for more money. Demanded it in cash, held my car hostage. Now just last week, my car hauler picked up the car. It will not Idle, the transmission will not shift into 1 or 2. You have to push down the reverse lockout to shift into 3 or 4th. Roy smoked the brand new clutch driving the car in 3rd gear from their storage shack out to the road and the car died 4 or 5 times. A job well done! Thanks Roy, I am sure it will cost me another $2k to fix all your screwed up work. Don't buy or trust this man. They lie, cheat, steal. Can't even wire up an oil pressure sending unit. Everything worked on my car except for the power antenna. I am sure many more electrical items will not work when I get the car back. Again, beware, these folks will rip you off.

I basically live in Milwaukee and have been to MOFOCO on two occasions. MOFOCO has been around since the 60's when I think dad was rebuilding engines for all the hippies. Those days are long gone and the kids, or whomever, have run the place into the ground. I stopped by there to order a simple electronic ignition for a '69 bug, just because I was too lazy to go online that day..."should be in, in a couple of days"... Never heard from then since. $7800 spent 20 miles north of their location would have gotten you one hell of a nice job. Sorry. Ask ahead HERE.

Thanks man, I know I will never get my money back, but I have many postings on the social media and I will never go away. It will be my duty to tell everyone in the whole world about these crooks. I would not have gotten mad at Roy if he had just told me the truth. "Hey, Mike, we are 6 months behind, can you wait?" But when he started blaming me for everything that went wrong in the last 9 months it was more than I could take. Now Roy has a very bad omen upon him and bad karma will always come back to haunt you. Roy will get his in the end of his pocket book. Orders will drop off, the Europeans and Germans will stop ordering from him and his business with turn dust in the wind. Roy will have to kill me for me to stop posting all over the world about his insufficient work. Remember, Roy lies, steels your engine parts. He stole my new generator, carb, intake, high output distributor, coil, wires, plugs, cap, and other parts that are not a "CORE".

I AM LUCKY MY STEREO IS STILL IN THE CAR.

Good luck on the vendetta!  The problem you have is even if you have saved all your documentation (you have saved your documentation right?)  You will have to file a small claims complaint or hire an attorney in the county of the business.  Even if you succeed in getting a judgement, it seems the shady businesses have lots of experience dodging judgements and you will need an attorney to collect.  Not trying to discourage you, just letting you know what the facts are. It seems nowadays the crooks have all the laws protecting them.  That being said, you may luck out and get some satisfaction.  I would think your first action should be to hire a qualified mechanic to check the work and give an estimate of repair. It may be cheaper to fix it then to hire an out of town attorney to collect for you.  I'll wager the internal components of the engine are ok and it is a simple tuning problem. The trans problem could be just a clutch adjustment. Grnated you should not be having to do any of this because it should have been done but you might as well get it epaired and enjoy the car again. I just got my car running after installing a new CB Performance 2110. I haven't driven it but up on the stands everything works great and no leaks. I'm a fellow Husker and even though I am on the other end of the state, if I can help PM me.

I've just read it and that's what I thought too, Paul. At least on the Samba you get to hear both sides of the story (that's what the feedback forum is for), and that's why I suggested he post there. I can understand a guy joining a forum to warn about an unscrupulous business, but you really should have both sides of the story.

This will be my last post concerning Mr Mccreary and his barn car.

1) Paid $5075 for a complete engine.  I have a video of the engine running using my test exhaust and good gas.  Mr Mccreary was provided this video.

2) Paid $1300 for a high performance transmission.  I have photographic proof of the upgrades and the transmission prior to installation. I also drove it in our test car as I do with every transmission.

3) Paid $175 for a performance clutch.  I have photographic proof that it was installed on the engine, which was also provided to the customer.

4) Paid $160 for two new CV joints and $10 for a shift coupler.

5) Paid $750 labor for removal and reinstallation of the engine and transmission.  I communicated multiple times to Mr Mccreary that this was for straight R & R.  If he wanted anything changed, it would either be $80 per hour or $100 per hour, depending on the service.

6) Paid an additional $750 in labor to replace the shift coupler(where I have photographic evidence of the animal nests), CV joints(I have pictures of this as well), wiring, remounting the coil, and rerouting the accelerator cable(it was at more than a 60 degree angle coming through the fiberglass piece of firewall.  There is a 0.0% chance that with the angle it was set at and the electrical tape holding it together; that it could have made a 1300 mile trip.

7) Was given a credit for $400 for his complete old engine.

Now, this is all documented through video and pictures.  I have also kept all his old parts as evidence.  I do feel quite bad about this whole transaction but I am unsure where I went wrong.  The main problem is that this customer thought his car was made of gold, when in fact it was just lead painted gold.  I fully admit that this car is not driveable as it is and needs a lot of additional work.  After putting in an extra 50 hours of unpaid labor, I just couldn't continue to work for free.

I also find it troubling that Mr Mccreary has all this proof through email(and can also have someone independently verify it) and yet he is writing every consumer group in the country wanting a full $7800 refund plus additional money.  He also attempted to get the insurance company to pay him for damage to his old engine along with selling it to me for $400.  Then he wants the parts back that I paid him for.

All in all, this has convinced me that working on cars like this is not in Mofoco's future.  We are now concentrating 100% of our effeorts on building cylinder heads, engines, transmissions and selling the associated parts.  Mofoco will not accept any more cars for service work of any kind until further notice.

I've been doing this for so long that I had a bad feeling that this transaction would end up like this.  I guess when you have an initial conversation with someone and tell them "I won't be even starting this for 2-4 weeks" and they call the next day asking if it's done......That is why I have all the emails, videos, pictures and old parts for evidence.  The cop that came to "arrest me for auto parts theft" took pictures of his old parts for their file.  I have absolutely nothing to hide.  I found this thread through google.

I looked up Roy's BBB rating it's an A+.  Now BBB is not the gold standard, if such thing exists, but out here California, full of fast deal artists,  an A+ would be a green light for me to proceed further in my search and get references etc. for this guy !

Another curious thing for me is why would someone who lives in western Nebraska, take his car east to Milwaukee?

I went to Milwaukee WI because Roy Henning, son of Randy Henning, the famous drag racer and engine builder son was said to be the best fricken VW engine builder in the lower 48 states. Well, as it turns out, Mr. Randy Henning is a true work of art because the apple does not fall far from the tree. So Roy Henning is the second generation of a real piece of work. If Roy spent just 1/2 the amount of time on doing great work and tending to his customer like real people and that the customer is always right, Roy's business would be flooded with orders. I don't know how Roy sleeps at night knowing he did you wrong. Roy could not even hook up the oil sending unit wire right. If he rebuilt my transmission, which he won't tell me if he did nor not, should work with the shifter as removed from the car. The only things Roy could have done when he said I made a mistake and I will tell you in a day or two when I get around to it, was installed the reverse lock out wrong or installed the nose cone shifter rod 180 degrees off. But Roy Henning with his 24 years of experience and only being 34 years old has a vast knowledge of how things work. But he will not make them work. He will just take your money and call it quits. Like I said, the apple don't fall far from the tree. So now Roy is spending more time looking for posts on the internet rather than building engines and spending time using good customer support. What a looser. Don't do any business with Mofoco because this might possibly happen to you. Who knows what parts where shown to the police officer. Roy has an abundance of parts to box up and say they came from ????? Anyhow, I thought I hired the best VW engine builder in the lower 48 states, and I still may have, but the person has no clue about mechanical ability, electrical, shifter linkage, carburetor's and all else. Hell, I had my old engine running great with a 4-barrel Webber. Shown in the video. My car hauler can't believe the "HACK" job Roy did on the wiring. No wonder the oil pressure gauge don't work. I wonder what else won't work? I have hired an attorney and he said I will win this case hands down. Wish so much neglect, breach of contract, over charge with out an estimate, demanding money in cash, holding car hostage and then charging storage fee's, the judge will look at that and say, "Roy, go into the meeting room and don't come out until Mr. McCreary is happy." Roy will then pay me all my money back plus $20 per day for every day the car sat over the 7 months in Milwaukee.

I have joined over 150 boards to let everyone know about MOFOCO. Don't let them rip you off like they did to me. That is why I am new to this board. Of coarse there are both sides of the story. But why would a business NOT tell you anything? They will not tell me if that is my old transmission rebuilt or one off the shelf. They will NOT tell me if that was my old engine block rebuilt, or a new one off the shelf.
They would not show me a video of the same engine running on the test stand and running in my car. Who knows what the heck I got. They would lie to you saying your engine was is final assemble in November, but really did not even start it until February the following year. I was told my engine was in final assembly in February as well. I am pretty sure Roy rebuilt my swing axle and screwed it up. He did admit to making a mistake but would not tell me what it was, nor show me anything he did. Come to find out when my car hauler picked up the car, Roy did not fix any of his mistakes. All he had to do was build an engine and transmission on time, R&R it and make it work. That he did not do.
So beware.

It don't matter what shape the car is in if everything works when it get there and don't when it leave, then the work was done wrong.
