I gave up trying to seal the crack and had a new engine built using a mag alloy case instead of the aluminum. THe f*&^*&%$ factory manual does not tell me the firing order nor which wires go where, so I am unable to start this beast. Does the wire from the ignition switch which side does the wire to the ignition switch go to...the neg or positive. DO not tell me in color as I am color blind please. AAA is getting real tired of me dragging this thing to differnt repair shops.
BTW, I have a late model Compufire ignition. I may have fried that already so that may be a non issue.

Hot from ignition switch goes to plus side of coil. Wire from condenser on the side of the distributor goes to negative side of coil The firing order is cast into the base of the generator stand . . . how COOL!. . . it's 1-4-3-2. Number one position is marked by a notch on the top rim of the distributor. The necessary timing marks are the dimples on the rim of the crank pulley, these are meant to line up with the seam where the case halves go together, when static or light timing the engine.

All VERY simple, but a manual would be a good purchase, maybe even Muir's book. Once you begin surfing around the VW sites, you'll find tech sections that'll cover EVERYTHING necessary to set them up, tune them up, and keep these little suckers alive FOREVER. I gave you the short hand answer to the questions that you asked, but there's ALWAYS more to learn. AND once you do, someone will tell you that you're wrong! It's the internet, after all . . .

Luck!

Hey TC. I do have a really thick VW shop manual and know Porsches quite well, but after 14 hrs at this I did not think to look on the case. THanks for your support as opposed to the jerk in front. Wish I was driving my car instead of chasing problems. At 2am I found the instructions from when I installed my electronic ignition and saw that in my haste I had it hooked up wrong. The unit is now toast and I will just re-install points. THat should take care of the starting. Now I have to figure out why when I turn the igniton switch to on alll the gauages peg out. I assume that it is a short.
It's all good. Installed ppoints and we were off and running albeit a little poorly HOWEVER FYII of nothing even the most extreme veteran---like my engine builder had me put the main and auxilliary venturis in my Dells upside down. ANd the manual that CB sells was pretty unclear on that. Now that it is running decent, I still need to tweak and the answers are again not in the Dell manual. More on another post. appology accepted David and a retract the neg term I called you. My car is about 90% there and noithing could upset me now.
