Hi everyone,

My formerly en fuego VS car is back together, and a fuel hose away from being road worthy and ready for pickup.  :-)  However, the shop doesn't like the positioning of a gasket in relation to the exhaust - a fingers space between them.  The most desirable solution sounds like replacing the exhaust.

Does anyone have a recommendation on the exhaust system and/or supplier? Because its a safety issue, I don't want to wait for distant shipping or custom manufacture.  Just something period correct and worthy of the car...

For sound, I like it a little throaty; definitely not obnoxious.  A low, sporty hum is ideal...

Thanks for any ideas!

~Justin

OK, so "My formerly en fuego VS car is back together, and a fuel hose away from being road worthy and ready for pickup.  :-)  However, the shop doesn't like the positioning of a gasket in relation to the exhaust - a fingers space between them."

That paragraph doesn't make any sense to us motorheads.  You start by talking about a fuel line and then about a gasket and then relate that gasket to the exhaust.  Gaskets are usually benign and unaffected by exhaust heat so I don't understand the concern here.  Did you really mean fuel line instead of Gasket?

If the potential fuel line route is "a finger space" away from an exhaust pipe, then, OK, it has to be moved but I would take Stan's advice and move the fuel line, rather than spend a couple hundred $$$ on an exhaust system.  For that matter, I don't have a fuel line any closer to the exhaust than 12" away, just to be safe.

Scoot on over to Larz Anderson Park in Brookline tomorrow (Father's Day) to see a whole lot of fathers bringing their German cars to German Car Day at the museum!  You can check out other 356/550's there, too - some of them might even be replicas!

Thanks everybody!  I will investigate the Tri-Mill.

The fuel line is unrelated to the problem at hand - only the last part to go back in before I can pick up the car...

I honestly couldn't tell you what gasket we're referring to; only that the shop feels the engine wasn't configured correctly from the start, and its proximity to the exhaust is an invitation to another fire...

Was sorry to miss Larz Anderson; but my dad isn't up to that kind of walking these days.

Thanks again!

German car day was nice.  300-ish cars there from barn finds to mega-bucks AMG's but even at Larz Anderson park it's a lot of walking so I totally understand.  I bought a cool 356 t-shirt from a guy air brushing them on the lawn.

I have decided to see if I can get some of the east-central New England replica cars together for an event during the summer - I believe there are at least 20 of us within an easy drive of, say, the Mass Pike-128.  Stay tuned for place and time.  In the meantime, all you New England replica people, send me a PM on here with your email address and I'll try to get a local group going so we can all meet and commisserate/share experience.

Hey Gordon; the meetup sounds great.  I hope to have the car back next week; though I may send it out again to have the top replaced with black.  :-)

I'd love to see how it stacks up against others like it.

Thanks Wolfgang; I will try to post a pic or two when the car comes back...  No idea about the oil filter / cooler!  (thus the fire...)

Happy Driving!
