I have been looking for an exhaust system to replace the VS special exhaust (Thing exhaust eystem)that came with ny 2001 VS Speedster. It's such a pain having to remove this system in order to adjust the valves. I came across the Euro-Tuck in the most recent "The Real Source" catelog #22f (pg.57) I was wondering has anyone tried this and is it any good. Also, will it fit without having to modify the body? Thanks for any input. - Mike

A few places sell this system. California Imports, for one. The question is...do you have the clearance? I know that on my older IM I don't (I measured my IM for one 6 months ago).
I'm looking for an exhaust too. There doesn't seem to be a lot of selection out there...since I want heater boxes too. If you want to go with a 1 1/2 inch system there is Kymco (fully merged) system but someone on this forum (JP I think) said that the system hung down too low. Then there's CSP but you may run into the same problem with having the mufflers in the way of the value covers. Also, I think CB has a merged system as does Gene Berg. None are cheap. I'm not a fan of the merged system with a big, fat muffler hanging down one side, although it probably produces the most power. Any other sources?
I just finished my new exhaust system. It just came back from being ceramic coated. I'll start out by saying this is my idea of the ideal speedster system, but may not be everybody's. I started with a 1 1/2 in. Thing header (for more ground clearence, as my car is very low.) from Kymco. I also used 1 1/2 in. heater boxes also from Kymco.
I then bought 2 Magnaflow mufflers that are 4" round by 18" I think , I'll measure again. These have 2 1/2" strait threw cores. My muffler guy assembled them like the CSP system. Yes I'll still have to remove 5 bolts to drop the mufflers to adjut the valves. I feel this is a small compromise for the great sound, and unrestricted flow, and still keep the stock look. The car revs free and has much more top end, without seeing anything but 2 tips out the back. Ill post pictures in and out of the car asap.
Someone mentioned the valve access with the CSP system. Having one installed last week I can tell you that although it is tight, you can easily do a valve adjustment without removing or lossening anything on this system. The angle the mufflers sit away from the valve covers is different than on the VS system (which I suspect is an S&S Thing System.)

I love this system for looks, sound, ground clearance, and function after using a functional but less classic appearing CB merged system with 1.5" boxes and a Dynomax.

I toyed with the idea of using Kymco's Thing System, built close to what was mentioned in an earlier post. That sounds pretty neat to me,and my hat is off to you for doing it. But my Q is: how much, after coating, and fabricating was the bottom line. It probably comes a little under the CSP system. But I gotta tell you this system looks great. The SS tips really show well, as it's basically SS from the mufflers back, the rest is coated. Looks pretty retro with mid level performance function and Heat! I would like to see that Kymco Thing system modified, any pics? You may have something there for others seeking something similar.

I think that system built for one of our members by Old Speed is an excellent alternative... cept is was $800, and you have to leave your car there as it is a custom fit, hard to do when you live in OKC. I'd love to see S&S play with their Thing jig and bend some bigger ID pipe in an angle that allows the outboard mufflers to sit out abeam the covers enough to get to the valves, then put some SS tips on. I'll bet they could sell 100-200 of these in a month if they were kept in the $300 range vs. $500-700 for CSP.

Jim

"Jim,
If I'm not mistaken, you have a 1776 with dual ICTs, do you not? Did you notice any change in performance when you went to 1-1/2" primary tubes, instead of the more standard 1-3/8" tubes? I also have a 1776 w/ dual ICTs and am interseted in this setup. Lemme know...

I had the VS "special" 1 3/8's with the ICTs until last Spring. Then I went to a CB Merged system with 1.5 pipes and matching boxes with a Dynomax. The increase in Performance was dramatic. Those 1 3/8s were choking that engine big time & it's a mild build: .44 heads 40x35.5 SS Valves P&Pd. 110 Cam, Scat Crank counterbalanced, and balanced with Scat Rods, Dual Springs, Solid Shaft Rockers, Straight Cut Cam/Crank Gears, Lightened flywheel, Melling Oil Pump with Full Flow and 1.5 QT Sump, thermostat and remote fan, ICTS mounted on CB Perf Intakes and linkage/filter set up. .009 Compufire, Blue Coil, 8 mm Wires. The recent change ro the CSP System brought no change in performance over/less than the CB Merged set up. Difference? Better ground clearance, mellow spound not as loud as Dynomax, but more throaty with Duals. Looks? 100% improvement for a classic look.

Jim, Can you post some pics of what the system looks like. Sounds real nice.

Ron,

My daughter borrowed my Digi. I'll get it back this weekend to be ready for T-Day pics. I'll take several shots and post 'em!

Jim-How far does the exhaust tips extend out to? I've heard that on a speedster they are too short...just under the bumper but not past it.

Eddie,

They come out about 1/4" past the bumper. We are bouncing around cutting them and putting another 1/2 - 1" on them for heat/paint purposes. They are 2" SS, I'll use the same, then touch up the bead with a small brush and silver heat.

Jim, sounds like your new system works & sounds really nice. I can't wait to see pics. To answer your question reguarding price I figure about 850$ with all the custom work and ceramic coating. I took pics tonite hope to post them this weekend.

Great! I'd love to see your system. I thought about going with a similar hybrid system... I think eventually someone will build a jig for something like yours and make some coin off a few hundred owners. Hope to see Pics soon. I'll post some this weekend.

Mike I have the euro tuck on my 71 Vdub and it works great. The euro appears (I said appears, don't jump my case if the pipes are not exactly the same length, but I think they are) to be an economical tuned header system that provides a deep throaty sound. A lot less restrictive and a good bit louder then the monza style muffler. The valves are easily adjusted without removing the system. I bought a second set for the Porsche but have not installed it yet, however judging from the VW fit, I feel sure it will fit the Porsche just fine, however the tail pipes may be a bit short (easily fixed with chrome tail pipe extensions).

Hope this helps.
