Will this tank fit without cutting or changing the filler neck to fit in a CMC?

Any other suggestions? I have an email already sent to VS.

Looks pretty tall at the spout.
I recall someone here had that tank, it looks like the filler neck is low... it fit but they had to cut a hole in the underside inner liner of the hood for the cap to clear. The neck can always be cut down and brazed to be just above the top of the tank
warning: thread drift-does anyone know the capacity of VS supplied fuel tanks?
Kirk won't return my calls for this information and the fuel sender moves with sloshing such that an accurate account is impossible.
I've been told all 61-68 bugs came with a 10.3 gallon tank but I'm not sure that's what Kirk uses.
Even on what our guage calls pegged-empty, I can only get 6 (or so) gallons in so I'm leaning toward 8 gallon capacity?

Mine is about 10 gallons.
thanks Robert, I guess I'm going to carry a gallon and run mine dry in town. Then I'll put the gallon in, drive to the nearest station and fill her up, then I'll know for sure. Maybe it's time to bend the sender float-rod.
Will, not sure how comfy, I would be running the tank to empty. Run the risk of sucking something not meant to be in your filters or carbs.
There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon, just measure your tank the best you can and convert to cubic inches.
Art, thanks for the idea but the tanks are irregularly shaped, have a round bottom from photos I've seen, so figuring square inches could be way over my pay-scale!
I have a filter before the fuel pump which (hopefully) eliminate any "stuff" from hitting the carbs.

Drive until you think it's empty. Go get ten gallons of gas from the station and drive home. Undo the fuel hose from the stem that exits on the bottom of the tank and catch what comes out. Fill it back up with the known amount of fuel that you got from the store.
When I changed out my filters and replaced the old rubber fuel lines to the good stuff from NAPA I drained the tank after thinking I was pretty close to empty. It still had almost three gallons in it. I put the gas back in it and took the float out. I opened up the bend until it read about a 1/3 of a tank. It's pretty close now and when it gets to empty I have about a gallon or so left which acts as a reserve.
VW fuel tanks, capacities per quarter tank (as read by normal VW fuel gauge):
1. Top (4th) quarter: very generous; 5 gallons
2. 3rd quarter: stingy; 1 gallon
3. 2nd quarter: stingy-er; .5 gallon
4. 1st quarter: 1.5 gallon
R: generous: 2 gallons.
Ed, I'm sorry, I don't understand.

I think he's trying to say they don't work.
They aren't linear. Due to the angle of the tank and the sender you don't get an accurate read. They are more of a 'rule of thumb'... with different size thumbs for each 1/4 hash mark.
Keeping fuel in the tank will improve the handling with the upfront weight.
If ... ever replacing a tank turn it around and it will be almost flat.
I see, said the blind man...
Alan, or...I could drive backwards for the same effect?
Alan,
If you flip the tank--can you go with the standard height neck?
No still needs to be cut
I always thought it had to be rotated from the VW position to get it to fit. Maybe it was just rotated so a spare tire would fit.
