Flying out to North Hollywood CA tomorrow to see John Steele and get to know my new Bali blue Carrerra coupe mit 2.5L Suby motor. Hoping to hang out with Tom Murtaugh on Friday for some extended curvy canyon road get acquainted cruising. Car was ordered in May 2013 so a long period of anticipation is finally over. It will be shipped to Indy and will be at the Carlisle show in May.

Dag I'm gettin' pumped!

All true. I've thought about alternatives quite a bit. I've even got a buddy who has volunteered to share the drive. Checked out Uhaul truck/trailer combo. Mostly want a virginal machine off the truck sans 7 states worth of miles/bugs on it. Counting on local talent to help with any future sorting; even a trip up to SE in Bremen if necessary. Did I mention I'm a turnkey guy?

One word of advise; MAKE SURE that John and the driver/shipper know that a Subaru motor can NEVER be shipped while in gear.  If it is strapped down too hard, or if it gets a good "jolt", while in gear, it can (and often times will) jump the timing belt!

I have had it happen on 2 Subaru powered cars (despite a thorough explination to the drivers), and John from Outfront says it happens in the sand rails ALL THE TIME!

The WRX and STi motors have 3 belt guards that help prevent this, but the NA motors DO NOT!

Just my 2c.

Dave, your reference to gastroenterology conferences implies you are a GI Doc. As a surgical pathologist I think we are related, professionally speaking (sorta). I am brand new to this website and joined because I contracted the "madness" again for a new hot car. I will turn 60 this summer and want to celebrate my good fortune at being alive and in good health. (Pathologists are a kinda morbid group as a rule). Anyway, I have read about the Beck speedsters and am impressed with the fabricated tubular frame for its presumed great rigidity, but I really love the coupe, which Beck does not offer.  I too fantasize about a nearly 4 season car, as you mentioned earlier. Long Island has plenty of rain, cold and snow, at least this winter. I suspect the JPS VW chassis is not quite as stiff as the Beck unit, but a coupe should be inherently stiffer. Do you find any compromise in driving feel or flex? Can I pick your brain a little?  if I make it to Carlisle next month I will look you up. Otherwise maybe I can give you a call and get a Speedster "consultation". Any feedback is welcome. Thanks. Ed Klein.

Ed Klein   Thanx for making contact across the old AO Microstar doubleheader. Pathology was my first love but the stiffs in the morgue gave me the willies and I bailed out. I'm 66yo and retired for 4 yrs; boy did we send a lot of items in formalin to you guys. More importantly I was a Beck driver from 2009 to 2013. I'll find out tomorrow and Friday how stiff the coupe is(trampolining?). My Beck's tubular frame sure looked awesome on the lift at the repair shop. I'd be glad to have a madness CPC/brain cutting with you at Carlisle or by phone.

GERD--photos soon...

To GERD/dlBash; you dirty dog! I'm salivating here on my IPad imagining you flogging your Bali Blue Byootie. I made a hotel reservation for the Carlisle show next month. I want to pick your brain over a drink or dinner. Enjoy the Hell out of it!

To KaryadI and tomrsr; I've been a coupe guy for the usual reasons (looks, quieter ride, security)  but the few times I have driven Miatas I understood the point. I used my 996 as a daily driver,to the horror of most Porsche owners (I live near the Hamptons. Need I say more?) and would still have it if it were not so bloody expensive to maintain/repair. No, a Speedster will never be a daily driver but it's also not a trophy car, at least not for me. I need more encouragement with the Rag tops. I plan to visit the Beck shop after the Carlisle show. I'm rambling. Thanks for "listening". EK

Will do Jack. Danny sounds like a speed addict, but I'll just have to find
out. Anything over 220hp in these bombs approaches Turbo Carrera power to
weight ratio. It could be dangerous for animals and small children. If that
picture on your message is your white speedster, it is just The cat's meow.
My kind of vehicle.

Hell

Jack, my eyes are bleeding from reading online about Raby motors, Spyders vs Speedsters , etc. Such depth of information there is. I find it fascinating. I am glad Carey told me about the Carlisle show. It will be an education And a riot! I wonder if Danny wears a helmet when he drives his Spyder.........

Just got back from my JPS shake down cruise with Tom Murtaugh. Tom was an awesome guide for the canyon roads and Mulholland above Malibu/PCH. We traded leading and he brought his Speedster dog, H2O, SPF 30 and a new Go Pro. It was a huge blast. It takes 10/10 nerve to get on the gas half way thru a blind switchback that you've never seen before! Best was Tuna Canyon downhill(which is one way)where you can use all the road. The coupe's steering needs some refining from John's team as it is too heavy and a little loose. Car under steers at the(my)limit but this can be throttle modulated. We did 140 twisty and freeway miles. By Carlisle I'll have a better driver review for all and maybe some test drives. A Suby coupe is way different that an air cooled Speedster. Hope to have the coupe in Indy in the next 1-2 weeks. Still trying to upload some pics but Win 8 is such a douche.
