Hello all. I just joined up , more to see what others are up to and educate myself on these little motors.  I used to restore/modify/race VW's but moved into street rods about 20 years ago. I recently got the chance to purchase two Speedsters at a price that I really couldn't say no at!

They are both Apal kits from Belgium and later Germany I believe. They have their own bespoke chassis that are obviously meant to take ball joint Beetle front ends and IRS rears. I have spare panels with them too.....they are a bit rusty so will be blasted before having some more steel added in certain places.

I like my cars low so one will be done Outlaw style with a load of Stuttgarts finest bits in there and slammed on 17" Fuchs.....other one may be done with VW bits and moved on.

In the box of bits was a screen set up that I hadn't seen before. I have been informed that it is a Convertible D model and is pretty rare?......alloy posts so not OEM Porsche...but nicely made.  I want a stock style shorty screen so will move this on.

Anyway, some pics.....everyone likes pics.... ;-)

Ross.

Well, the bodies both have different tail light set ups. I also got a load of rear light sections which are ready to be glassed into place(the three light set up) so maybe they were options from the maker?  Personally, I don't like either set up and would prefer to use teardrop style. Legislation for registering over here means I may have to use 3 lights.....but I would change them later.

Hey, Ross!  At least, coming from Glasgow, you can understand most of the characters on Doctor Who (like David Capalbi or David Tennent!)  I usually have to watch each episode a few times to get what the hell they're saying......

Those windshield corner posts were made for a car (think Cabriolet) with roll-up side windows.  The forward edge of the side window glass could be a lot straighter with those corner posts and would fit better into the weather strip rubber when the window was cranked up.  Yes, they are scarce as hen's teeth, BUT you need the roll-up side window mechanism to take full advantage of them.

As far as I know, they fit into the same bulkhead holes as the shorter "Speedster" style corner posts, but that positioning might be slightly different on an APAL (we don't see any Apals over here).

The stuff in the back of the shop looks pretty interesting, too!

Ross:

One time that I was working in the UK I was lucky enough to rent a Merkur (Sierra)  XR4Ti.  (OK, so the company paid a LOT for me to rent that Merkur, but it was worth it for a month).  That car was the terror of the M6 for a while, there.

I was working out of Henslow, UK (office in Feltham, really) and traveled as far north as Carlisle. Wish I had mede the trip to Glasgow, but I doubt that I could have understood anyone there.....

Before and after I got married I had a '66 Mustang notchback; 289, 4-speed, "normal" seats (not those silly "pony" seats) and all in "Candy Apple Red".  Still miss it, but still have the same girl.

One is lhd and one is rhd but I have a spare dash for rhd..... right for us......wrong for you. ;-)

Other cars in workshop are mainly Fords just now....32 roadster, 3 window coupe, 34 sedan, 66 Mustang and a 56 Chevy truck.

I think I forgot to use the sarcasm emoji again....thought the rolling eyes would be enough.

WNGD, no problem....sarcasm is my favoured response too. ;-)

Gordon, Messrs Tennant and Capaldi have "tuned" their accents for the international audiences they need for tv and movies. If real Glaswegians played those parts you would need subtitles!

Anyway, cars....looks like the 944 alloy banana arms will fit in these frames so that's a result.

That's OK, Ross.

I live near Boston, Massachusetts and we've all been asked, around here....

"Do you guys speak English?"

No....We speak "Bahsten".  Kinda like English, but with a twist.

If it was English, everyone would unnerstan us.

Oh!  Here's my car, a 1993 CMC (Classic Motor Carriages) based on a '69 IRS VW pan, 2,110 and a VW gas heater (our weather is pretty much like yours):

Looks like one was destined to be water cooled (or a front oil cooler)?  CMC was largest US Speedster producer til '92 or so.  They had a $995 rollup window option that used a frame like yours.  It supposed used Chevy Chevette winders and glass(?).  The Chevette only survived for a couple years during the US gas shortage.  The roof was taller too.windup windows002
